Mgjor airlines link up with regional carriers WINNIPEG (CP) — Major airlines are seeking alliances with smaller carriers serving remote communities in Man itoba and Saskatchewan in an effort to cut costs, industry spokesmen say. Until recently, the two provinees were the only re. gions left where jet airlines have not forged business partnerships with companies that provide turbo-prop or piston-engine service. Last week Canadian Paci fie Air Lines announced that it had acquired 25 per cent of and Winnipeg later this year. Under the deals being sought, the large airlines want to stop costly jet ser. viee into centres where pass- enger traffic is not heavy enough to make the service viable. Rather than abandon those markets, however, the major airlines have sought to hang on by providing non-jet ser- vice through a subsidiary or through a partner. “For at least the past two years we've been talking to the majors with a view to wards getting into a feeder, system relationship,” said Ken Gregg, vice-president of finance for Perimeter Air lines Ltd. of Winnipeg. The most favored partners have been those with rev- enues of $20 million annually or less. Gregg’s company provides regularly scheduled air ser- vice to Dauphin, Cross Lake and Norway House in nor- thern Manitoba and Red Lake, Ont., and Yorkton, Sask. Most other regions of the country have already been carved up between major airlines agg their turbo-prop allies, said Peter Schnobb, a spokesman for the Canadian Transport Commission. In British Columbia, Can- adian Pacific Air Lines came to an agreement with B.C. Air several years ago. The smaller airline now carries Canadian Pacific's logo on its planes and ‘ickets. House sales rise TORONTO (CP) — House buying fever seems to be catching on this spring as mortgage rates stay at reas. onable levels. On a national basis, house sales are expected to in- crease eight per cent and prices six per cent to average $86,000 this year, says the latest forecast by Royal Le. Page Residential Real Estate Services. “Our earlier ‘guesstimates’ have been overtaken,” with strong demand and lower in terest rates building market momentum, said David Hig- gins, vice-president and div- isional general manager for Royal LePage. Strong demand and a shor- tage of listings in January and February drove up prices. But an increase in the number of new listings has helped to restore greater balance to the market, Hig- gins said. New listings 2ormally in crease substantially from March through June, to meet rising demand in the spring. Kootenay Doukhobor Historical Society ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING Thurs., April 24 .m. Alberta T2R 0G8 PULP WORKERS REJECT PACT POWELL RIVER (CP) — Members of Local 76, Can- adian Paper workers Union, have rejected a tentative agreement reached earlier this month with the pulp and paper industry. The 1,350 workers voted 58 per cent against the two- year deal which would give them no pay raise in the first year and 40 cents an hour in the second year. Despite the narrow rejec- tion, local president Terry Skilbeck said he expects the offer will, be accepted in provincewide voting, expec- ted to be completed by April 28. The pulp and paper indus- try reached a _ tentative agreement on master con- tracts with its two major unions on April 6 — almost three months before the cur- rent contracts expire. Both the CPU and the Pulp, Paper and Woodwork- ers of Canada said they would recommend accept- ance of the offer to their members. The contracts cover almost 13,000 workers at 13 mills. If the contracts are rat- ified, it would be only the second time in the past eight rounds of bargaining that settlements have been reach- ed without a strike or lock- out. The current contracts ex- pire June 30. The companies have been struggling because of de- pressed pulp prices and the high value of the Canadian dollar against European cur rencies. Workers have ex ienced income cuts as the mills used down time to trim inventories. time and money as pos- sible. 1 General Cuz ion Spociatate wf Geductions exemotons ond." 8, exemptions ai Sareea. *QO° the least tax possible.
