es Castlégar News February 9, 1966 CBC faces strike by union By BILL ANDERSON and TONY VAN TORONTO (CP) — The CBC: and its most powerful union appear headed for a strike as the national broadcaster, faced with severe financial restraints, tries to remove a clause in the contract that guarantees a specific number of union positions ‘The impending clash with the National Association of Broadcast Employees and Technicians comes after all 29 collective agreements with 10,000 unionized employees at CBC were up for renewal in 1985. Only six minor agreements have so far been reached, and the technicians — traditionally committed to firm union principles — often set the trend for other CBC unions. The NABET clause at issue says 2,108 positions will exist for the union, which won the guarantee after a four-month strike in 1981. The walkout is perhaps best remembered for the random interruption of NHL playoff coverage that preceeded it, but its effects were felt throughout the corporatiba. Taping of future programs was postporied while the network concentrated on news and played pre-taped shows on television. On radio, favorites such as Morningside and As It Happens were cancelled and only shortened newscasts were played between taped music. Another strike would also have a serious effect on programming, but the corporation was shaken by the federal cuts last year and feels it must reshape its labor situation. Pierre Raciocot, director of corporate, industrial and talent relations for CBC, says the network needs more with 's and contract employees, but “it is prepared to provide some job guarantees — as long as the workers take some other job in the corporation — in order to avoid a massive layoff. “We are prepared to protect the individual; this number (2,103) protects the union.” “There hasn't been any inclination on their part to modify their position,” says Lowe. “In previous negotiations, I always found they could be flexible, but not this time.” The union will announce the results of its strike vote this week, but approval is usually given routinely in a group AVIS Vehicles Available to ICBC Claimants LOCATED AT Costieger Airport Terminal Adastra Aviation — 365-2313 * Cors * Trucks possenger von * ICBC interim vehicles WE HONOR ALL CORPORATE RATES! CBC also faces sticky negoations with two other major unions: the 2,400-member Canadian Union of Public Employees, which includes clerical staff, announcers and stagehands; and the 575-member Canadian Wire Service Guild, which includes reporters and news service staff. Both unions, which have yet to take strike votes, are concerned with matters related to the cuts. SUFFERS LAYOFFS CUPE, hit hard in the layoffs, is seeking absolute job security for any member with more than two years’ seniority. The company says it needs room to manoeuvre, but the union says CBC wants total freedom. The guild, though unaffected directly by the cuts, is fighting a proposal that would see some reporters put on salary and denied overtime pay. While the CBC awaits it final 1986 budget figure from the federal government, the joker in the deck is the direction taken by a federal task force on the future of broadcasting in Canada. If its recommendations, due in March or April, are strongly supportive of the CBC, the network may have an improved funding outlook and be able to negotiate under less pressure Tea reduces iron absorption OTTAWA (CP) — Because of their tannic acid content, tea and coffee both inhibit people think iron-deficiency anemia is an age-related problem, but his is not the MOROSO, MARKIN & BLAIN CERTIFIED GENERAL ACCOUNTANTS 241 Columbia Ave. Castlegar Ph. 365-7287 Amway Beauty Salons “Sorry, pal. | just bought the planet. | want you and all your buddies off by next Friday.”’ Draperies Optometrist HAIR ‘ANNEX rs AST RUMFORD cy) PLAGE © Ceramic Tile * Mason * Certitied Fire Satety Inspections 735 Columbia Ave. 365-6141 the body's absorption of iron, says a spokesman for Agri culture Canada. case. “In fact, iron absorption is usually normal in healthy seniors.” Tea, for example, has been reported to reduce iron ab sorption by one-half or more, function in the body.
