(AP) — Young people who suffer even one case of blis- tering sunburn may double the risk of developing a ser- ious skin cancer later in life, a U.S. researcher reports. Melanoma is fatal in about one in four cases. The study followed re- search indicating that mela- noma, unlike milder skin cancers, doesn't seem closely related to a person's lifetime exposure to the sun, said Dr. Arthur Sober, associate der- motology professor at Har- vard Medical School. Sober’s study matched 111 melanoma patients with 107 healthy people of similar ages and the same sex, and com- pard their memories of sun related experiences during childhood and adolescence. People who had suffered a blistering sunburn in adoles cence ran twice the risk of later melanoma. About half the melanoma patients had experienced such sunburns, while less than a third of the other group did, Sober said The study also found that people who took vacations of a month or more in sunny areas during adolescent Amway DOT'S DISTRIBUTORS Amway Products $$ Save $$ Highly Concentrated Products (Biodegradabl a HAIR ANNEX Le, * Ceramic Tile * Masonry * Certified Fire Satety Inspections 735 Columbia Ave. 365-6141 Concret ROOSTER REDI-MIX CONCRETE Slocan Valley Call 355-2570 Satisfaction Guaranteed Money Back Approx. 3,500 Items Quality Vitamins Cosmetics, Cleaning Supplies, Etc.
