Feo: 28 Island. k, ramp planned though she proposed it be somewhere near Zuckerberg The board had initially proposed placing the dock on the island, but the city’s heritage advisory committee and the Zuckerberg Island Heritage Park as part of a program to and increase use of the Columbia River. “We must have access of some kind to the river,” Luella Andreashuk, chairman of the development board's public relations, promotion and tourism committee. Andreashuk pointed out that there is no dock or launching ramp within city boundaries. The wooden dock would measure about two metres by 15 metres and provide room for four boats. Andreashuk said the development board has not yet decided on a location, the idea. says advisory i both rejected The committees said the dock would not be in keeping with the island's heritage park theme. Andreashuk said the city’s planning department is examining several locations in the Zuckerberg Island area and preparing a cost analysis. She said it is important to have the dock and ramp located as close to the downtown area as possible, enabling visitors to walk to local shops and services. Andreashuk said Scottie Tait of Scottie’s Marina has Castlég Vol. 39, No. 101 offered to construct the dock for free. Westar Timber's Southern Wood Products sawmill has offered to donate the logs, which Andreashuk says “are not cheap.” Tait will build the dock at his marina and float it down the river to the chosen location. However, Andreashuk said it will cost about $15,000 to $20,000 to prepare the site She said purchasing the property shouldn't present any problem “It’s the excavating costs,” she said. She added that she hopes the City of Castlegar will help with some of those costs. Meanwhile, she is exploring other ways to fund the excavation. Andreashuk cited safety as the prime reason for the launching ramp. th oO we continued on page A2 a) Dy eo News CASTLEGAR, BRITISH COLUMBIA, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17, 1986 4 Sections (A, 8, C&0) Monager { compoting Room Foremon J Student enrolment steady By MIKE KALESNIKO Staff Writer Overall student enrolment in Castle- gar schools has increased for the first time im several years .. . by three students. In September of this year, Castlegar schools had a total of 2,241 students enrolled, but as of November the num- ber increased to 2,244 students. “We're cautiously pleased,” said schools superintendent Terry Wayling at Monday night's regular school board meeting. “You can read into this anything you like.” In September, 1985 a total of 2,387 students were enrolled but, by Novem- ber of that year, the number had dropped by 46 students to 2,341. “Hopefully the numbers have stabilized,” said Wayling. Many of the school trustees said they only recall a pattern of steady decline since serving on the board. Those were two of several recom. ‘mendations the Selkirk College Board ata meeting Tuesday. ‘The recomimendations are part of & report prepared by Selkirk College staff on the B.C. Student Assistance Program The report now will be sent to a Ministry of Education task force cur rently investigating ways of improving the financial aid program Other recommendations contained in the report include releasing program information and applications forms earlier and to have the Education Ministry consult with all post-second ary institutions before making any changes to the student aid program One other suggestion is to consider a centralized processing system for the application forms. The report argues that such a system “would remove anomalies and inconsistencies in pro gram administration.” College president Leo Perra said the task force should give careful exam The Selkirk report also suggests that ination to the Selkirk report the three primary objectives “of a “| hope some of the recommend. viable student aid program” should be ations we have made will receive some to ensure there is access to post-sec close consideration The government ondary education, a manageabie debt realizes there are problems with the load for students wanting financial aid LEO PERRA sound proposals looking for some sound and reasonable recommendations “and the proposals the college has proposed certainly fit into that category.” Perra said the average cost of a post secondary education to a student who is not living at home is $500 - $700 a month. tenance and \t a heat of 10 degrees in all facilities.
