The Castlegar Senior Hall was all
decked out, the Christmas tree glitter-
ing on Dec. 19th, when 84 members
and guests sat down to a lovely turkey
and ham dinner catered by the “Home-

Carols.

The entertainment began with a few
listening tunes played by the “Sharps
and Flats” while members and guests
relaxed.

The West Kootenay Line Dancers
arrived and entertained everyone with
their different steps and ways of danc-
ing, which was enjoyed by all.

Regular dancing was followed.

To start the New Year off
with warm and cosy thoughts,
the Castlegar Christian
Women’s Club will be doing a
special feature on quilting.

Gloria Riebens will be a
special guest, providing a
demonstration on quilting,
“Bee-utiful Creations.”

All ladies who come are be-
ing encouraged to enrich the
evening by bringing, for dis-
play, any quilted item them
might have in their home.

The club, which is non-de-
nominational, invites all
ladies in the community to at-
tend.

There is always a special
singer presented, and this
month they are pleased to
have Lori Block, of Castlegar
bringing “Musical Patch-
work.”

The special inspirational

speaker will be travelling from
St. Albert, Alta., to speak
throughout the Kootenays.

Her name is Darolyne Bur-
ton and she is a busy mother
of four, wife of a businessman,
and a part-time university
student who also enjoys crafts,
reading and meeting people.

She has a story to tell, a sto-
ry ladies will not want to miss.

Ladies are invited to attend
this dinner evening at the
Fireside Inn from 7 p.m. to 9
p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14.
Cost is $7.

Plan ahead, too, for the fol-
lowing meeting on Feb. 11.

On this evening, ladies will
have their one opportunity of
the year to invite all the men
in their lives to our special
“Guest Night.”

IN MENORY

Mike William Makortoff

Mike William Makortoff was born to William and Hana
Makortoff in the Village of Petrovka near Kamsack, Sask.
on Dec. 18, 1909.

They moved to British Columbia in 1911 and first set-
tled in Ootischenia. Mike later moved to Raspberry where
he met and married. Lucy Davidoff on March 28, 1932.
They had four children — two daughters and two sons.

Mike was a member of the Union of Spiritual
Communities of Christ. He was also a member of the
United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners, Local
2300.

Besides carpentry, Mike enjoyed gardening and was an
expert at pruning trees. He was always hospitable and
displayed a good sense of humor.

Mike was predeceased by his parents, sister Pauline
Makortoff and sister Mable Kanigan.

He leaves behind his loving wife Lucy, daughter Lorna
(Fred) Verishagin of Shoreacres, son Mike (Nettie)
Makortoff of Raspberry, daughter Marie (Lloyd) Wilson
of Raspberry, son Jack (Lavern) Makortoff of Parksville, 11
grandchildren, five great grandchildren and sister Mary
Comtois.

He was surrounded by his family when he passed away
peacefully at his home on Jan. 3rd., 1993. He will be sad-
ly missed by all. May God accept him into his heavenly
home.
