Lo take stock of the quality of their public service. of us are public servants to some extent, Every clerk, sales- . businessman, ticket agent, office worker or other esses. makes a profit, proves rat the public needs the type of service these businesses offer. However, there are certain standards of efficiency courtesy and cheerfulness that the public has a right to expect from these| public vervants, Where different businesses compete for the public’s favor, these standards are assured because a businessman is carefel to hire these employees yho will not drive business away. there is no competition, however, and the service cannot be obtained elsewhere. the employees are tempted to be less care ful lest they drive business elsewhere, Which results in a lowering] C af the standards of public service. Requests from the public that will mean a bit of extra work! result in outbursts of annoyance. Certain services become restricted to only certain days a week. Service that is given is often accom~ panied by offensive remarks and epithets. have ‘This is deplorable, Why should persons, who in off duty moments are pleasant and agreeable, become soyr and offensive when doing a service the public is forced to ask them for? Surely these people don't think that the demands of charity and neighbor- ness cease for them once they have begun their working day. Why thould the public be made to suffer when asking for service it is] th the employee's duty to render? Fortunately this unpleasant situation is not widespread here. Tet it does exist. We would suggest that all business and govern-| ment employees, review the manner in which they have lived up to thei duties as public servants. They could then make no better| New Year's resolution than to make up for any shortcomings in this regard. ‘Mr, and Mrs. Lou Chizmazea| nd their home in Castlegar, to ther THE LIBRARY CORNER ‘The annual meeting of the cu ‘Uegar Public Library Association] will be held next Tuesday follow- ing the regular library hour, it} was deci Library Board last Tt dca ‘and will be carried out) an ory irchase of other new vol- umes, eluting the popalar Cana. ew,” was rake under im- inediate conaideration.
