This office and the citizens of this yicinity are constantly. re- ceiving iaquiries concerning this section of the country which .are difficuit to answer by letter, so the Recorp gives the following information for the beneht of all: Rossland is situated in British Columbia, eight miles from the international boundary line be- tween Canada and the United States, Itis reached from the north via the Canadian Pacific to A ead, on the C river, from there tv Trail by steamer, and from Trail to Ross- land by the Columbia & Western railway. by the Rossland Typo- graphical union, No. 335, and desirin; to appeal therefrom to the president oO! the International Typosrap’ ical union, we, A. J. Brill and Theodore Rusch un- der oath make the following answer and argument as our appeal: ‘hat we have been in the employ of Ebes C. Smith, proprietor of the Rors- land Recorp for more than seven months last psased and that during said time we have of our own free will and choice, boarded and lodged with‘said pro prietor of The Recorp, and never been threatened with discharge should we quit boarding and lodging wito him. That on the 26th day of September, 1997, the Rossland ‘Typographical Union No. 835, by resolution requested us to leave the boarding and lodging furnished by the said Smith, and upon our refus- ing to do so, on the 18th. day of October 1897., the said union ata special meet- ing of the union, called without proper notice, expelled us from said union for said refusal and no other reason. That on the 23rd day of October, and within the five daye allowed by section, 34, artical 8 of the constitution, we filed our notice of appeal with the proper offi cera of the subordinate union No. 335. That during the time we worked for the said Sinith, no employee has been compelled to board with him or hes been discharged for so doing, That the said Smith hus during our our employment paid the ecale fixed by the union. ‘W. H, Myers quit the employ of Eber C. Smith on his own accord, without proper notice and at the time.of xuitting was in debt to him, and is now inter- ested in the publication of another pa- er. E George Garwood quit working for Mr. Smith to go prospecting and return and boarded with him five or six weeks witnout as much as even thanking him. Fred Wooley quit the employ_of Mr. Smith and was not discharged.” M. D. O’Connell lost his situation on The Recorp by his inability to hold it on account of intemperance. A. ©, Campbell was discharged by W.A. Myers, while foreman of The Rec- ord office claiming he had the right to select his own force and his action was sustainep by tee union. That the action of Roseland T¥PO- graphical Union, No. 335 in expe! ling us was unjust and without warrant or precident and that the members of the said union who voted for our expul- sion acuated by spite and predjudice and that there was no justice or reason in their arbitrary decision. . Thorefore, we pray that the action of land ical Union, No. 335 From the south via Sp Hi ng us be set aside and that we W by the Sp Falls & Northern and Columbia & = in be resored to full membership in go ing as we were before said action Re Rossland has forty hotels, with bars, eating and lodging ruoms, and a dozen restaurants. There are three weekly news- papers and two dailies. other branches of business are well represented. ‘he popula- tion is variously estimated from 6000 to 7600. Board and lodging at the ho- tels, $2 to $3 per day. Meals 25 to 50 cents. Furnished rooms, $2.50 to $7 per week. tis useless to write and ask if any particular business would pay here. . Everybody must be his own judge and take his own chances, While there is not work tor all who iaquire, most sober, indus- tiious persons who really wish to work have sofar been able to obtain it.” : ‘We would not advise any man to land here ‘‘broke” without friends, although many who have done so are doing well. ‘This camp is now setthng down on 8 business basis. The populace is engaged not only in working the mines and conducting the busi- ness of the town, but are buying. or bonding and developing min- ing property; buying and selling real estate; building bouses for rental purposes, prospecting and staking prospectors. Many are here simply lookingon in, won- ‘derment. We believe it will go on and on until Rossland can boast of a population of 50,000. After that it will probably settle down to a proposition of a pay roll but not for a few years. There are plenty of money here from all sections of the globe; but the principal investors are from the United States, with Canada largely interested. The history of the camp reads like a fairy tale, and the fabulous riches are scarcely excelled by the imaginary “King Solomon’s Mines,” We will not attempt to discusstke mines in «single ar- ticle, as we have been writing about them for nearly three years and have not been able to keep up with them, The ore ship- ments speak for themselves. ‘The town has won an enviable was taken. and other relief as seems meet and proper.
