A documentation of Hitler's final hours, complete Even an Oscar can’t mellow Jack Palance BY BOB REMINGTON 4 agg oe a long film career that includes the classic 1953 Western “Shane,” quintes- sential tough guy Jack Pa- lance had never won an Oscar until he played Curly, the griz- zled old cowboy in last year’s “City Slickers.” Now that the long drought is over, you’d think he’d be ec- static, but no. “I think after somebody is in Jack Palance the business that long, they can live without it,” says Palance, true to his rock-hard image. “It means a lot more offers, but I don’t know if that was be- cause of the Academy Award or the push-ups.” Palance, who stole the show at this year’s Oscar ceremo- one-armed push- ily 4, in “Eli’s an ex-war-ace who helps a realize his dream of : ate was a beautiful script, with some good lessons for all of us,” says Palance. Under the gruff exterior, there is a softy at heart. e As the NHL season begins, CBC’s “Hockey Night in Cana- da” carries three games on Saturday, Oct. 10. Viewers in Ontario and southern Alberta will see Toronto at Calgary. Quebec and the Maritimes will get Pittsburgh at Montreal; the Edmonton Oilers at Van- couver Canucks airs in most of the West. e On Thursday, Oct. 8, CBC airs an exhibition game fea- turing one of the league’s old- est teams, the Montreal Cana- diens, playing one of the league’s newest teams, the Ot- tawa Senators. e Baseball’s National League Championship Series begins Tuesday, Oct. 6, fol- lowed the next night by the be- ginning of the American League’s contest. All games air on CTV. e Sunday night, Oct. 4, CBC airs “The War Against the In- dians,” a two-and-a-half-hour documentary by director Har- ry Rasky. The ambitious film attempts to chronicle the dev- astating impact of European settlement on the North American Indian, with lots of politically correct Columbus- bashing thrown in, of course. Although its season doesn’t day night, Oct. 5. Reporter Victor Malarek has the goods on Canada as a haven for war criminals from Somalia. BY LYNN HOOGENBOOM Gots Lucas has one of the most enviable track re- cords in movie history. Smash hits in which he has been in- volved as the writer, director or executive producer (fre- quently in multiple combina- George Lucas tions) include “American Graf- fiti” and the “Star Wars” and These days, however, he has turned his attention to series television. His “Young Indiana Jones” is now airing Mondays on ABC. It stars Sean Patrick Flanery as the teen-age Indy and Corey Carrier as Indy at ages 8 to 10. “What I’m interested in do- ing is telling stories and mak- ing films,” Lucas says. “I came up with an idea for a large sto- ry - many, many hours of ideas. And the only place it seemed to fit was television.” the older shows about his emo- tional coming of age. So many ideas were coming into my head that I finally went to Par- amount and said, ‘I have an idea for a show.’” The series is shot on loca- tions ranging from Africa to Vienna to India. Scripts don’t shy away from crowd scenes or tricky stunts. Directors in- clude Bille August (“Pelle the Conquerer”) and Nicholas Roeg (“Don’t Look Now”). How has Lucas managed this on a TV budget? “Most of the people working on the series are extremely committed to it, and that goes a long way,” says Lucas. “I’ve spent a lot of energy develop- ing new production techniques to cut the costs. And part of it is just experience. The entire world is filled with very tal- ented and creative people. I'm willing to take chances with people that other producers probably wouldn’t because they’re young, or they’re un- tried, or they’re foreign.” All of the episodes are self- contained, but Lucas is also developing a larger story. “There’s a whole story here that goes from when he’s 5 to when he’s 25, and every month has been plotted out,” he says. “If you put them all together when they’re on compact discs and watch them in order, it will all make sense.” adolescence of the hero of “Raiders of the Lost Ark.” “I thought of Indy traveling around the world with his par- ents, meeting up with famous people and, through that, rious disciplines,” Compact discs, ‘Lucas feels, are the viewing technology of the future. That’s one reason that he doesn’t feel he is lower- ing himself by working on a TV series. “It’s all going to end up on laser disc,” he says, “so where it goes between here and there is of only passing in- terest to me.” Vv AD!
