until he played Curly, the griz-
zled old cowboy in last year’s
“City Slickers.”

Now that the long drought is
over, you’d think he’d be ec-

League Championship Series
begins Tuesday, Oct. 6, fol-
lowed the next night by the be-
ginning of the American
League’s contest. All games

e Sunday night, Oct. 4, CBC
airs “The War Against the In-
dians,” a two-and-a-half-hour
documentary by director Har-
ry Rasky. The ambitious film
attempts to chronicle the dev-
astating impact of European
settlement on the North
American Indian, with lots of
politically correct Columbus-
bashing thrown in, of course.

turned his attention to series
television. His “Young Indiana
Jones” is now airing Mondays
on ABC. It stars Sean Patrick
Flanery as the teen-age Indy
and Corey Carrier as Indy at
ages 8 to 10.

“What I’m interested in do-
ing is telling stories and mak-
ing films,” Lucas says. “I came
up with an idea for a large sto-
ry - many, many hours of
ideas. And the only place it
seemed to fit was television.”

The series is shot on loca-
tions ranging from Africa to
Vienna to India. Scripts don’t
shy away from crowd scenes
or tricky stunts. Directors in-
clude Bille August (“Pelle the
Conquerer”) and Nicholas
Roeg (“Don’t Look Now”). How
has Lucas managed this on a
TV budget?

“Most of the people working
on the series are extremely
committed to it, and that goes
a long way,” says Lucas. “I’ve
spent a lot of energy develop-
ing new production techniques
to cut the costs. And part of it
is just experience. The entire
world is filled with very tal-
ented and creative people. I'm
willing to take chances with
people that other producers
probably wouldn’t because
they’re young, or they’re un-
tried, or they’re foreign.”

All of the episodes are self-
contained, but Lucas is also
developing a larger story.
“There’s a whole story here
that goes from when he’s 5 to
when he’s 25, and every month
has been plotted out,” he says.
“If you put them all together
when they’re on compact discs
and watch them in order, it
will all make sense.”

Compact discs, ‘Lucas feels,
are the viewing technology of
the future. That’s one reason
that he doesn’t feel he is lower-
ing himself by working on a
TV series. “It’s all going to end
up on laser disc,” he says, “so
where it goes between here
and there is of only passing in-
terest to me.”
