Castlegar News October 9, 1988 BUSINESS Stumpage rates drop By CasNews Staff Westar Timber Ltd. is eagerly awaiting an anticipated drop in local stumpage rates. Forest Minister Dave Parker has announced the new stum page rates royalties paid to the government for cutting trees on Crown land for October through December. The new timber charges are expected to decrease Interior stumpage rates by $20 million and raise coastal rates by $8 million. “We'd certainly like to see some relief there,” said Westar Woodlands manager, Gordon Murtay, who feels an average stumpage rate of about $10 per tree is too high. The evaulation branch of the Ministry of -rests in Nelson which is currently calculating the new rates says rates will drop between 40 cents to $2 in the area. The minimum stumpage rate of 25 cents paid to the province when logging and milling are more costly than revenue “won't move,” according to evaluation officer Hubert Nyst. Companies will feel a decrease on “positive” rates, said Nyst. Nyst. The new rates have been changed to reflect lumber prices which are down in the Interior and up onthe coast, Parker said.
