The report shows the ag- gregate loss as follows: Canadian companies, British companies, companies, Mr. Fitzgerald adds: “Such disasters are experienced in every country. The recent fire was the most disastrous has occurred since the St. John fire in June, 1877, but there have been in the interim several of min- or importance; for example, that of Windsor, N. Taking up the matter of the ne- cessity of a higher duty on lead and its products, the Vernon News in a recent issue says: One of the planks in the plat- “form of the recent Conservative convention, favored the imposition of a high tariff on white lead, lith- arge, orange lead and other articles of like nature, This is a more im- portant matter than may be appar- ent at the first glance to one unac- .quainted with the facts concerning the lead industry. Roughly speaking, Canada im- ports annually some 7ooo tons of white lead from Germany, while we produce far more pig lead than we consume. This produc- tion would be largely increased and a profitable manufacturing industry atthe same time built were the States during rhe last two weeks of August tohave been 3,446. these 294 were from tuberlocis, EDITORIAL NOTES. The Liberals are already apolo- gizing for the smallness of their public meetings, and for the lack of enthusiasm. For some time an agitation has been going on to have an increase made in the wages paid the com- positors in the printing bureau at Ottawa, Themen asked an in- crease from $12 to $15 a week, on account of the increased cost of liv- ing. Horn. R. W. Scott, as secre- tary of state, has charge of the bu- ceau and made an offer of $13.50 week, which was accepted by the typographical union. Toronto's technical school has at- tracted the attention of the United States authorities, who have sent Walter Gillman Page of Baston on a tour of inspection on this subject . paint lead excluded by p ical prohibitive tariff. No part of the Dominion would benefit more by such a tariff than this province. It would mean an incalculable advan- tage to the silver-lead mines in the *‘Slocan, and would in this manner affect our own district. Our tariff on lead pipe is 25 per cent, while on white lead, etc., the average tariff does not reach 5 per cent, The result is that we make our own pipe, and send out hundreds of thousands of dollars for the paint material of which lead is the basis. ‘ The. ~ miner, the manufacturer, throughout Canada.
