Dear D.L.: Here's your letter: I appreciate the opportunity to let you tell your side of the story. Thanks for writing. Dear Ann Landers: Based on experience, I have some friendly advice for would-be parents. Please DON'T have children for the following reasons: 1. To please your parents. 2. To get a second chance to live your life through your child. 3. To find unconditional love. 4. To have financial support in von old age. 5. To strengthen a shaky mar- riage. Postpone having children if you grew up ina home where Dees your tunnel have a “Once upon a time there were three tunnels, The. ShopKeepers’, ’ The, WorKers’. and The Out- Casts’,; Each Tunnel had its own caves and several times a year,a different group . called The Strangers would visit, The. ShopKeepers’ Tunnel was very old, long and because they used candles for light, it was also , very dark, Their caves, were wedged together, side by side, along the edge of the Tunnel. A nasrow path ran in front. The ShopKeepers had been there for many many years and most of the caves were old and decrepit. These ShopKeepers had only one Vision for their Tunnel; a Vision that would keep the Tunnel the same, . “We are the ShopKeepers, we know what is best,” they would say to themselves. The Shop- Keepers even made rules and organized groups to protect the Tunnel from The Strangers. “We don’t want or need The Strangers” they cried,” we like the candles and want more WorKers to buy our goods.” ; The WorKers’ Tunnel was devoid of anything beautiful. Arti- ficial fluorescent and quartz halo- “gen lamps shone on the. stripped walls of the Tunnel and illuminat- ed big gaping holes. The WorK- ers had no Vision for their Tunnel; their job was to strip, dig, and use lots of paper to keep everything tunning smoothly. “We are the WorKers and this is what we do,” they would say to themselves. The WorKers also made rules and organized groups to protect the Tunnel from The St s. “We don’t want or there was i or abuse. Get pr P i help before you start a family, or these problems will undermine your parenting and create a new generation of addicts and abusers. If you're not ready for kids and are sexually active, use contra- ceptives. Condoms and foam can be pur- chased in most’ pharmacies and, when used together, are 98 per- cent effective. Please DO have children if you enjoy them, can offer an emotion- ally and financially stable home, and have the maturity and self- esteem to nurture a young life. The world needs more parents like you. Parenthood has been an enrich- ing experience for my husband and me, but I’m glad we waited several years before starting our family. — L.M., Littleton, Colo. Dear Colorado: You've written a letter that deserves to be taken Seriously, And, may I add, Parent- ing is the most demanding job in the world for which there can be no real preparation. It's all on- the-job training.” The best advice was offered by humorist Josh Billings. First, caves in the Tunnel were joined to create clusters so it wouldn't really look like a Tunnel at all. Then they created other corridors around the perimeter which brought in natural light. They planted flowers and trees everywhere and knew that they would grow. Some caves were very old but were being lovingly restored to their former glory. They said, “We are The Strangers. We want and need The Strangers to come and see it,” they would say. The OutCasts had few rules or regulations and no need for orga- nized groups to protect their Tun- nel from The Strangers. Instead, they greeted The Strangers with open arms and invited them to look around. One day very important Strangers stumbled upon the three tunnels. Strangers turned around and walked out muttering to them- selves, “Alas, these WorKers have Tunnel Vision and we can not stay here either.” Then the The Strangers spotted the entrance to the third Tunnel which belonged to the OutCasts. Hesitantly they entered. To their amazement, the inside of the tun- nel was the most beautiful site they had ever scen. If the recy demand reached the extreme, we could very quickly become marginal supplicrs in what have traditionally been key newsprint inarkets for B.C. mills,” Clarke said. “Legislation here would only reduce our competitive posi- tion and amount to exporting jobs outside Canada.” Clarke noted that the Union of B.C. Municipalities at its recent meeting passed a resolu- tion urging member communities to give preference to recycled paper products. “I'm not sure the people who asked for that resolution had all the facts. Many of the municipali- Brrr rer ties they depend direct- ly or indirectly on the pulp and paper industry.
