Mr, Merry was born Oct. 21, 1919, at Trail. A welder by trade, he was also involved in the logging and mining industries in his early years. He worked for Western Exploration in the Slocan Valley and at one time owned his own welding business in Two Hills, Alta. Mr. Merry was employed by both Sheritt Gordon Nickel Miné and Great West Steel before joining the staff of the welding department of the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology at Edmonton when that institution first opened. In 1980, after 25 years at NAIT, he retired to Slocan where he built a home on property on the Slocan River. A veteran of the Second World War, Mr. Merry married Anne Pinenborg in Holland on June 19, 1946. He was an active member of the Slocan Legion. A lifelong jist, Mr. Merry inely i what he preached. He was also ardently pro-Canadian, choosing regularly higher-priced Canadian goods over imported items priced for less. He is survived by his wife Anne; sons and daughters-in-law, Ken and Dorit Merry of Maple Bay, B.C., Richard and Indira Merry of Edmonton, and son Peter Merry of C: gary; four daughters and sons- in-law, Helena and Paul Carter and Tina and Mike Bellefeville of Calgary, Jacqueline and Jerry Royds of Langley, and Louella and Lyle Oberg of Brookes, Alta; seven grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law Helen and Jock Gourlay of Slocan, and Elizabeth and Gordon Nelson of Silverton; and sister Mildred Spence of Chase, B.C. He was predeceased by his parents, Allan Etta Merry. His only brother, Bud Merry of Slocan, passed away suddenly the day after Phil. Cremation has taken place. Bud Merry Alfred Bilson (Bud) Merry of Slocan passed away suddenly in Slocan on Friday, May 10, 1991, at age 74. Mr. Merry was born on March 20, 1917, at Trail. Employed in his early years by both the D.B. Merry Lumber Co. and Cominco, he spent six months on the Dew Line in 1956. He worked for B.C. Hydro on its Bridge River hydroelectric project before joining Celgar as head of its heavy duty mechanics. After 18 years with Celgar, he took early retirement on April 4, 1978, building a home on family-owned property on the Slocan River near Slocan. Not content with retirement, Mr. Merry worked part-time for several years for Mitchell Supply in Castlegar, commuting from Slocan. He married his wife Florence in 1942. During the Second World War, he was an aero engine mechanic with the 405th Squadron, First Canadian Bomber Pathfinder Force, and was a longtime member of the Legion branch at Rossland. Mr. Merry enjoyed curling and golfing and helped build the Castlegar Curling Rink. Mrs. Gouldie was born Nov. 13, 1916, at Aneroid, Sask. She grew up in Aneroid and Melville, Sask., where she began her schooling and finished the rest of her schooling in Swan River, Man. She married Donald Gouldie at Swan River on March 1, 1938. Because Mr. Gouldie was in the construction business, the family moved to many communities throughout Canada. They lived in Toronto, Mission, Kemano, Bridge River, Kamloops, Surrey, Grand Rapids, Man., Vancouver, Gold Bridge, Hudson's Hope, Mica Creek, Nelson and finally settled in Castlegar in 1977. While at Hudson's Hope, Mrs. Gouldie worked at Rod’s Mens Wear. She enjoyed craftwork as a hobby. She did embroidery, afghans, jewelry and shell work. She also liked travelling and the outdoors. She is survived by her husband, Donald of Blueberry; one son, Victor of Hudson’s Hope; one daughter, Donna Hicks of Stewart, B. C.; five grandchildren; and one brother, Harry Monson of Parksville, B.C. Funeral service will be held at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel on Friday, May 17, at 11 a.m. with Rev, Ira Johnson officiating. ‘Cremation has taken place.
