There is nothing in the arga- ment againstit. In the first place the Record’s tender was admissable under the resolution asking for tenders, had it not been a union office. In the next place the Record was ‘‘squared” before the time had expired for putting in ten- ders, althotgh there was atrick at- * “tempted to make 1t appear otherwiee. The Roselander objects to the Record’s tender because the proprietor isan alien. The Miner is also owned by an alien and the plant of the Times is owned by an alien. 1twonld be pretty hard to de- termine who ownes the Rosstander, even if it was entitled to be called a news- paper, whieh it is not. The argument that the Record would lose money on work, if applied to the Miner and Ross- lander they would both suspend publc- tion. The city is in need of eaving all the money it can, not only on the printing, but in every o:her way possible. — Mr. Heinze would blush with shame if he could read from day to day the. long winded editoriale in his paper, The Miner, about the C. P. R, going to freeze him out. It cries like a child and begs ; Telief from the Dominion government and seeks to get the sympathy of the public. Mr. Heinze is a business man and built his smelter and 1ailrosd well knowing what be had to contend with. He has had opportunities to treat with the-Le Roi people and the C. P. R., and has preferred to go it alone, and we are sure is willing to {take the consequenecs without the great atnount of kicking and complaining about the course pursued by the C. P. It is putting great ex- pense upon the municipality and un- doing what will take time and money to do again: besides it is uncertain that as good a sale van be made again of tLe The have scored a point in having the $50,000 bylaw quashed, which leayes the city in an embarrassing predicament. Germany, in demanding an apology and indemnity of Hayti upon an eight haur notice, is not pursuing the couree ‘ Tshes would have adopted with England, Russia, or any power equal in fighting strength with herself; but as she has a precedent laid down by most of the great uations, she can feel safe in her - pulldozing methods. —__ Wanted $2,000. THE DOMINION OMPAN Y, Dept. 7, 356 Dear: , Columbia, eight miles from the international boundary line be- tween Canada and the United States, Itis reached from the north via the Canadian Pacilic to Arrowhead, on the Columbia river, from there ty Trail by steamer, and from Trail to Ross- land by tke Columbia & Western railway. From the south via Spokane, Washington, by the Spokane Falls & Northern and Columbia & Red Mountain railways, Rossland has forty hotels, with bars, eating and lodging rvoms, and a dozen restaurants. There are three weekly news- papers and two dailies. All other branches of business are well represented. ‘The popula- tion is variously estimated from 6000 to 7500. Board and lodging at the ho- tels, $2 to $3 per day. Meals 25 to 50 cents. Furnished rooms, $2.50 to $7 per week. Itis useless to write and ask if any particular business would pay here. Everybody must be his own judge and take his own chances, While there is not work tor all who iaquire, most sober, indus- trious persons who really wish to work have so far been able to obtain it. We would not advise any man to land here ‘‘broke” without friends, although many who have done go are doing well, This camp is now settling down on a_ business basis. ‘The populace is not only in working mines and conducting the busi- ness of the town, but are buying. or bonding and developing min- ing property; buying aod eelling real estate; building houses for rental purposes, prospecting and staking prospectors. Many are heresimply looking on in won- derment. We believe it will go on and on until Rossland can boast of a population of 50,000. After that it will probably settle down to a proposition of @ pay roll but not for a few years. There are plenty of money here from all sections of the globe; but the principal investors are from the United States, with Canada largely interested. ‘The history of the camp reads like a fairy tale, and the fabulous riches are scarcely Hed by 2 east bound, TICKETS TO JAPAN AND CHINA VIA TACOMA and ROBTEEEN PACIFIC apple prey time cards, mapsand fioxets. py to of the 8.F.&N. and its eet ons, or GIBBS, General Agent, Spokane, Wasn.
