News January 26, 1991 LOCA L/PROVINCIAL NEWS Freelance photographer Peter Minchuk of Castlegar shot the above aerial photograph of a fire at the Atlantic No. 3 oil well in Leduc in 1948. It took firefighters nine months to put out the fire. Autobiography continued from page 83 “*Well, son,”’ replied the professor, guts. We can use you in Spain. We will need pilots and air power to defeat these Fascists and Nazis.-On the subject of air power, I’m a disciple of General Billy Mitchell. He has predicted that air power and aerial bombing will win future wars. I prophesy that not only will General Billy Mitchell’s Predictions come true, but there will be so much destruction by aerial bombardment that it will Stagger the imagination.”’ The professor spent the rest of the night Prophesying what would happen in the near future if . the “i mentally i d ies’’ let Spain go down the drain as they had for, China and the Ethiopians in Abyssinia. History has since proved him right in ‘every detail. Looking back today, I have no Fegrets about my’ decision to go to Spain. I met many interesting People who are now historically prominent and my mind was stretched by meeting them. a The professor and I finally arrived in Lakehurst. We checked into a ‘‘flea-bag’’ hotel for 25 cents a night, double, and I treated him to some very good three-course meals for 35 cents each. There was a lot of ‘“‘scuttlebut’’ among the aviation fraternity that the Hindenburg would never make her first 1937 summer trans-Atlantic crossing Her gas cells held seven million gubic feet of highly explosive hydrogen gas because the U.S.A., concer- ned about the situation in Spain, had refused to ex- Port the safer helium to Nazi Germany May 6, 1937, dawned cold and wet, with rain Pouring and thunder booming, accompanied by con- tinuous streaks of lightning under a low ceiling. It was very windy and even the birds were walking. At 3:30 p.m. the Hindenburg Prepared to land, but the weather had deteriorated further and the “you got 7 /®ind velocity had increased. The professor and 1 waited out in the open at the airport and were thoroughly drenched, and we shivered in the cold wind. We looked up at the Hindenburg as she floated by, just clear of the low ceiling. She looked even larger than her 804-foot length, one-sixth of a mile long, with a gross weight of 242 tons, powered by four 1,100 horsepower Mercedes-Benz engines: This Titanic of the skies was a marvel of German aeronautical engineering as were the efficient Junker aeroplanes I had flown earlier with heavy loads of cargo in the Canadian north. The professor, however, shook his fist and swore at the Hi ‘g -until she di: ‘ed again into the overcast sky. Finally, about 6:30 p.m., the pilot of the Hin- denburg decided to make an approach. Again she broke out of the overcast at 600 feet and like a mon- strous whale, hovered down to be moored. I had her in my viewfinder, my camera shutter clicking. , I looked at my wrist watch. It was 7:30 p.m. I kept aiming my camera at ‘the hovering monster. What a spectacular sight! I decided to title the film A Portrait of the Titanic of the Sky! Oh, for some sunlight to light my subject. My watch now said 7:35 p.m. The Hindenburg had just dropped her lines and the 200 ground crew scurried around like ants below the incredible hulk, grasping them to secure her to the mooring mast. Suddenly in the viewfinder I observed a glowing light at the rear of the Hindenburg. Sunlight breaking through overcast? Thank God! This was the light I'd prayed for 2 Next week: The professor's prophesies come true. Paper examines land use VICTORIA. — Crown Lands Minister Dave Parker has released a Public discussion paper concerning the use of Crown land for commer- cial backcountry recreation. Commercial backcountry recreation, or adventure travel, is a rapidly expanding sector of the tourism industry and involves out- natural environments, on a fee-for- service basis. Many of these activities occur on Crown land. “Orderly and d of the y recreation industry requires a clear government policy to guide allocation and management of com- merical Crown land rights,”” Parker said in a news release. ‘‘To achieve the greatest long-term benefits for all British Columbians, the growth of this industry must balance with the needs of other users and residents within the capabilities of the land and resources to bear such use.” The discussion paper examines a number of issues surrounding the use of Crown land for backcountry recreation. It also contains proposed Policies to address these issues and guide the future management of the industry. Parker said he encourages People i in b y i to review the discussion paper carefully and make comments to the ministry, sustainable BEA LUNG SAVER USE CHRISTMAS a ts SEA Our Action Ad Phone Number is 365-2212!
