Controllers continued from front poge ter seems to mean the removal of the controllers is ‘‘a done deal.’’ If Lewis is not prepared to reverse the decision, then no one can changg Campbell s bgcome involved. But i pears she ha@mot be the decision either. A delegation led by Moore met with ‘Campbell in Vancouver in late July. The mayor said the delegation “made a very sound and reasonable presentation’’ to Campbell in an ef- fort to enlist the minister’s help to keep the controllers in Castlegar. “*We were supported by the provin- cial government,”’ Moore noted. McDonald said Transport Canada officials are prepared to remove the controllers and take the heat as long as the decision remains a local issue and ‘‘doesn’t go national.’’ The six Castlegar controllers will “make no difference at all’’ to the shortage across Canada since there is a bottleneck at the training facilities that prepare controllers to work with radar and other navigation equipment used at larger airports, he said. Claims that safety will not change when the flight service specialists are in charge are false, McDonald said. FSS spokesmen who make those their Charles Milner, a _ regional spokesman for the flight service specialists, said ‘‘it’s a good move”’ to put FSS personnef into the tower. “‘It’s much more desirable to be up in the tower and have the visibility and the ability to observe’’ vehicle and aircraft movement, Milner said. The flight service station is currently housed in the main airport building. Safety will not be:compromised by the loss of the controllers, he said. A study done by a private firm found the level of safety at FSS-operated airports and airports with controllers to be the same, Milner said. “‘We contend that the level of safety will be the same.”” And flight service specialists can provide more services than con- trollers, such as weather observation, Milner noted. Raccoons continued from front page “She can say all sorts of things and ‘we-can debate the issue back and for- th but we’re not going to do that,’’ he said. Murdoch said had she known the animals were going to be killed she would have been willing to send them back to people who would care for them in Ontario at her own expense. “I would have done anything to save their lives. It was unbelievable that this could have happened,”’ she said. Murdoch, who moved to Castlegar from Toronto last month, said it’s standard practise in metropolitan areas to adopt orp) babies .of in May from a Animal Rescue Mission and said she never thought to check import or ex- port laws before travelling to B.C.— “T was naive perhaps in thinking that by moving them to the country I was taking them to a better place,” she said. Krause said his office received in- formation two weeks ago that Mur- doch was trying to ‘‘breed raccoons and repopulate an area that didn’t need raccoons.”” He said Murdoch wouldn't cooperate when asked to turn over the animals so the office obtained a sear- ch warrant for her house. Murdoch handed over the raccoons before the search warrant was executed. Murdoch said she would have com- plied with the officers’ request for the animals sooner but couldn't find them as ‘they roamed free in her backyard in the Pass Creek area. “She had been informed if she has any problem with our conduct she has the names and sources she can go to, —and-the-Mini: rent, Krause said. “| won my weight loss battle and lost 105 Ibs. thanks to Nutri/System.”’ 1 love food, so it's always been a struggle to keep myselt from overeating. T-shirts found cause of fire Eighteen volunteer firefighters raced to Castleaird Plaza on Sunday morning after two quick-witted Castlegar residents spotted smoke coming from the Red Laser T-short shop, fire chief Bob Mann said. The small business was filled with smoke and heat from a smoldering cardboard box of T-shirts that had ignited after being left beside the gas furnace, he said. Mann said he is waiting for the insurance adjustor to provide an estimate of smoke and heat damage to the store and the bakery beside it, “A lot of people could have been out of work indefinitely’’ at the plaza if the fire department had not been called so promptly, he said Fire travels quickly through such buildings, he noted. Car rolls down embankment Two 17-year-old girls involved in a single-vehicle accident on Broadwater Road near Brilliant on Monday would have been injured if they had not been wearing seatbelts, RCMP said. The driver lost control of the vehicle going around a slight curve at about 11 a.m. while travelling south on Broadwater and rolled over the embankment, police said. The RCMP had no estimate of the damage to the vehicle. But Draper, 16, and Bouthillier, 21, did well enough to win during their semi-final competition Thursday and move on to the finals Friday. Draper said she didn’t know how the dance team eventually placed since the competition only acknowledged the top placements. Draper and Bouthillier were first runners-up during the Castlegar Talent Search in June that saw ‘Sonoko Kambara, a 15-year-old pianist, take top spot. Kambara also competed at the PNE. Draper said the Castlegar contestants were up against ‘‘excellent competition’’ and the PNE event is a ‘‘good opportunity for young talent in B.C.’’ to get recognition. She said she would like to compete against next year. JARROD IS! Malls LOTTERIES continued from front page Meanwhile, plans on the other proposed mall were stopped dead at the end of last month when developer Sandy Reid of the Reid Group didn't come through on his commitment to buy four pieces of property next to the Sandman Inn. Reid couldn’t be reached for com- ment at his Vancouver office but the real estate agent handling the deal said the uncertainty over the proposed pulp mill expansion has investors seared to make a commitment in Castlegar. “*The problem with the mill is what it is,” Dave Daniels of Castlegar Realty said Tuesday. ‘‘Once that is organized he'll (Reid) be right back at it again. “I’m still actively working on it and he wants to go ahead, it’s just the dif- ficulty with his financing people. They are unsure what’s going on with this pulp mill.”” Daniels said Reid lost his deposit on the properties but wouldn't specify how much it cost the developer. Tebbutt said the whole situation is kind of sad for Castlegar, ‘‘because I don’t think any of the proposed malls are going to go at this time.” SUPER JET The most exciting performer yet to walk on water.
