Last Friday evening a large crowd assembled at b Cook Avenue school in Rossland to honor a lady who ~ served the people of our elty by teaching our youth (or some thirty years. Mrs. Paparich taught my ebildren as well as the whole family of Stantons plus the Baleys and the Bells and one ~d say that's quite an ilrder. In speaking on behalf of lbe parents, Mrs. Barb ltanton related things that lappened through the years ._ her children advanced ugh their early grades. Mrs . Paparich was nted with a silver tea ce from the parents and lie staff of the school and lpOke briefly of her days at school. Now she said she going to concentrate on g to handle their new r home and see a lot of country. She and her band Frank will travel itensively during the months. There have been many hUnuters in Rossland who ve benefitted from Mrs. ch's tutoring and it fitting so many people w fit to attend her ent party. We of the r family would like to. it was a privilege to have part of it all and tond to this lovely lady our wishes for a long and happy retirement. May travel far and always the people of our town always be waiting to come you back. Tuesday was· once again a ous day at the upper e for the regular y gathering of retiree rs. Herbie SL Jean did a r job of handling things the whole show moved without a hitch, we played low gross and low net and bingo, bango, bongo. Gord McLaren was top may in the low gross section earding a 38, Jim Scott followed with a 40. In the low net division three balls were distributed, going to J. O'Connor, Gil Besso and Wes Tanner, with 30, 31 and 32 respectively. Bud Hachey topped the bingo, bango, bongo section with 13 points, followed by B. Hammond and Jack Buchanan with 12. There were 44 retirees taking part and from our counts it won't be long abefore we start topping the 50 mark. Somewhat better than last year and getting more popular all the ·time. The willingness of people to dig in and give a little time to orchestrate these weekly gatherings gives it a real boost along. Nell week's conductors will be Phil Bateman and Gil Besso. Our friend, Noland Garrison from Northport, was up again and thoroughly enjoyed himself. Noland makes it almost every week and is a welcome addition to our club. I bad an enquiry from a young lady in Trail the other day asking if there was a slow-pitch tourney slated for our Golden City Days celebration. I was unable to attend the Golden City Days meeting on Tuesday as it clashed with our last general meeting before the summer break at the Legion. Still, I did talk to one of the members of the committee, Ivan Bell, and he tells me that nothing is planned along those lines. From what I could gather from my conversation with the young lady from Trail, she was talking about mixed teams, something like the Cominco tourney. I have her phone number and if something does develop along these lines, I shall pass the word along. The cessation of hostiliti~ in the South Atlantic must have a lot of people breathing a little easier. How, if they could come tel the same point about 'the Middle East we would hea11 something besides wars and rumors of wars on our ~ sets. Maybe more people would be able to concentrate on the business of getting this · old world back to normalcy. The Rossland Labatts took part in the Summer Games soccer playoffs in Cranbrook last weekend and came away with a 1-1 record losing 1-0 and winning 2-1.
