wallets don't open as freely for indulgences as they Gnee did, artists find themselves looking for new ways to entice pros- pective buyers. Some exhibit their work at local fairs and craft shows; others set up curbside art. shops; a few even sell door to door. But a collection of craftsmen in this Canadian Shield resort aréa 160 kilometres north of Toronto have hit on an idea that draws buyers like bees to honey. Each year, around Thanksgiving, residents and tourists make a beeline for this area during the two-day Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour. In a region famous for its spectacular display of fall foliage, 20 participating artists open their homes to hoards of visitors who swarm in to see their works. A tour map outlines the 60-kilometre route along which the studios are scattered. Each artist's home is marked and a thumbnail sketch describes the type of work he or she does. SET OWN PACE At their own pace, the visitors venture along the back roads, seeking out the pockets of artistic creativity among the pine and color-splashed forests, the granite rockface and the cold, sparkling lakes. At one such studio, in a sunporch overlooking a beaver Two men died in crash INVERMERE (CP) — The two men who died in the crash of a light plane in southeastern B.C. Wildlife subjects are particularly popular on the tour, says Wayne Church. “People come to the tountry to enjoy the country. It’s an association he (the buyer) is trying to capture.” It’s also a personal touch. “In Toronto, when you go to a gallery to buy a piece of art, it’s seldom you see the person who made it,” he says. “Here, you not only see the person who made it, you see him do it. That's very appealing to a lot of people.” The rock-and-forest setting lends itself to artistic retreat, particularly for painters like Michael Cleary. BOUGHT LAND A few years ago, Cleary was so impressed with a land scape site he was painting, he bought the land and built a home there. “It was close enough to southern Ontario for supplies and a market, but also close enough to the subject matter I wanted to paint, which is Northern Ontario.” Artists have been settling in the area because it is ideal for them, he says. “The real estate is less unreasonable (in price) than in Toronto. It’s a pleasant setting. It is possible to live, work and sell from this area.” Guests file thorugh his studio and into the adjoining kitchen, careful to step over the pair of dogs dozing in the doorway Judging by the gallery guest-books, most of the visitors are from the Toronto area. And judging by the proliferation of designer labels among the crowd, most probably aren't intimidated by the price — which can range from a few dollars for pottery to $900 for sculptures. CASHBOX FULL Mieke Martin's pottery shop in a log cabin elbow to elbow with visitors. They carved wood cashbox brimming with bills indicates they're not just browsing “It’s been so busy this year,” says Martin, squeezing ina brief interview between transactions. “The tour has been growing every year by word of mouth. People will come one year, then they bring their friends along the next year.” Jane Smith of Toronto describes herself as a tour “regular.” Clutehing an armful of stoneware intended as Christmas gifts, she is quick to recommend studios that shouldn't be missed. “This is really a gifted community of artists up here,” she says. “We try to be in Muskoka for this weekend every year. It's a marvellous time to shoo for Christmas.” Alzheimer's risk high for siblings MINNEAPOLIS (AP) Brothers and sisters and children of people with Alz heimer's disease, the leading also known as senile demen form of senility, face a 33- tia, is unknown per-cent chance of also de veloping the disease, new re search shows.
