Local Man Charged Under Firearms Act A Castlegar man, Lorenz Paul Fietz, has been charged with storing a firearm without reasonable precaution for the safely of other persons, The charge arose from an incident in the north section of the city May 6 in which a 14-year-old boy was acciden- tally shot. He was taken to hospital and operated on to remove a .22 calibre projectile. The firearm has been described as a revolver. Tighter gun regulations were put-into force earlier this year. Castlegar Funeral Home was in care of arrangements, Last Weekend Slow For Local ‘The rainy weekend saw limited activity. involving Castlegar RCMP who investi- gated only 21 complaints in- cluding the arrest: of one im- paired ‘driver, suspending the licence of one driver, and issuing two 24-hour suspen- sions. A minor hit and run in the Celgar parking tol and early reports of bears being sighted in the residential areas also occupied members of the local detachment. The shoplifting of a $359 camera was successfully in- vestigated by police following a report from Helen's Flower Shop. Charges of theft over $200 are pending against an 18-year-old male from Rasp- berry Village. In spite of the rain and cold temperatures police report ille- gal activity at the Bob Brand- son Swimming Pool in the south section of the city when several youths scaled the fence for a swim. Police state this was a too frequent occurrence last year and police advise area residents that charges will con- tinue to be laid in these instances. Police also report the plea- sure of dealing with an honest New Denver Painter Tops W.I. Art Entries “The Beaver. Tree", a painting submitted by. Mrs. Mary Legge of New Denver at the West Kootenay. District Convention of Women's Insti- tutes, won top honors in the ‘Tweedsmuir competition in art, and will be sent to Victoria for entry into the federated con- test. “The above was part of a report of New Denver's dele- gate Mrs. M. Flymn, which she presented to W.I. members and guest, Mrs. B. Hope of Victoria, ata recent meeting of the institute. Mrs. Flymn is the district agriculture convener for the West Kootenay and, in her report, cited conservation and pollution as subjects of great . interest at the conference. She indicated that peaple nowadays are showing much enthusiasm + in home gardening and home- grown foods. Mrs, Flymn told the ladies of the address by Mrs. Fenner of the provincial board, who spoke on Rape Seed as grown in the Peace River—how it is grown, where it is milled and the products made from it. In other business at the meeting, it was reported by social welfare convener Miss M. H. Butlin’ that $356.87 was collected by members who can- vassed the area during the month of April for the Conquer Cancer Campaign. It was noted that a student will be applying for the W.I. scholarship and this was en- dorsed by members. The month of May is the W.L. citizenship month, and this theme. was carried out at the meeting by citizenship com- millce members, Mrs. R. Spen- cer and Mrs. A. Jenks. The booster was won by Mrs. Hope. A quote from R. Burns was given by Miss Butlin as the thought for the day. Following the adjournment of the meet- ing, tex was served by hos- tesses Mrs. T. W. Clarke and Truck Drivers Lower Fatigue With Massage A truck convention under- way in San Francisco is show- ing off the latest in rear-end suspension—a cushion that pul- sates and massages the driver's posterior while he rolls along the highway. The manufacturers, H. Koch & Sons, of Anaheim, Calif., claim the Koch Komfort eushion delivers such a great massage that driver fatigue is reduced and accidents are avoided, The seat is an inflatable cushion that sends air pressure. through a series of passages. The air massages the muscles, aiding “circulation .of blood through the lower extremities.” It has its own mini-com- pressor and also provides a sort of air conditioning for the driver's seat, jing to the RCMP man during the weekend when Albert Eversfield, of 63 Wood- land Drive, Castlegar, found a wallet containing $243 in cash in the downtown area and turned it in to police.
