The bright side is that this is one of the best investments you can make. You are investing in your future, and given your talent and desire, it may well be the bést investment you'll ever make. Tf you haven't put aside enough money to finance your education and living expenses while you attend college, then there are two levels of government who are willing to invest in you and your future. The B.C. Student Assistance Program (BCSAP) can provide the financial aid you require to allow you to complete a program of study. This assistance applies if you require upgrading to allow you to enter college or begin a program of study. The program includes the Canada Student Loan and other incentives such as equalization funding to cover relocation to attend college, and a remission plan to encourage you to finish your selected course of study or even to go on to earn higher credentials. The program now carries expectations of students aE SRO TOR ROR ARNE Other eligibility requirements do exist. Applicants must be either Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, a resident of British Columbia, registered as a full-time student (currently 60 per cent course load), and be able to demonstrate financial need. Apply early for financial aid so you'll know where you stand before school begins. Students planning on attending Selkirk College are encouraged to submit applications for assistance by June 30 prior to the September they plan to enroll at the college. Applications take about eight weeks to process. Students should not wait to be accepted by an institution before applying for assistance. Selkirk College counsellor Ab Dunn and student discuss program options, admission requirements and application procedures — some of the first Steps students should undertake when considering enrolling at Selkirk. ADMISSION PROCEDURES Start off right and apply early Applying for admission to a college, university or technica! institute can be a trying experience or a relatively simple one. By introducing some planning to the process you can reduce some of the “heartbreak” associated with applying for admission. You will be required to complete a series of steps before an admissions decision can be made. Below are a few easy idelines. You are r ible for ing the steps on time. To ensure you get off on the right foot, you should start early. An early application will let the admissions office know you are serious about being considered by the institution and give you time to sort out any problems that may arise. You should familiarize yourself with the deadlines of the college's application process. Some institutions have a “general” application deadline in addition to deadlines for specific programs or courses. This information can usually be found in the college calendar, or obtained directly from the admission office. If you miss a deadline call the ad- missions office and let them know that you are still planning to apply. Each institution possesses different application pro- cedures. Follow their instructions and complete the application form in detail. Additional information may be required by a specific program, check to ensure you are including all the information the institution wants from you. Complete and sign the application form and return it to the Admissions Office. 3. Applicants 18 years or under must submit an official record of school marks or an official copy of a secondary school graduation certificate. Some Programs require mature students (those over 18 years old) to submit official school records and official transcripts of previous work to prove that college course prerequisites have been met. 4. Send all required supporting documents and materials to the Admissions Office. Do not mail application materials to a department or technology program area. Co-op program pays off Co-operative Education, first introduced at Selkirk College more than two years ago, is the formal integration of academic studies with paid work experience. Students are provided the skills and knowledge necessary to become competent and competitive in the job Paid employ in iti relating a student's chosen field of study provide opportunities to develop skills in communications, decision making, moti- vation and interpersonal relationships. Through co-operative education, students experience relevant study-related work experience as opposed to “just a job” to help finance their education. Co-op Education programs can be more demanding than regular diploma programs, however, those able to meet the challenge of hard work and added employee responsibility will find the rewards well worth the effort. Selkirk College presently has three, diploma programs offered in the Co-operative Education format. Computer Information Systems Technology prepares students for employment in an entry level position as a junior programmer/analyst, operator, small systems manager, information centre assistant, micro computer specialist, and a variety of other positions related to computing. The program, introduced in a co-op education format nearly three years ago, includes courses in computer hard- ware, programming and systems analysis along with studies ib h i aceounting, technical writing and other courses that assist students in understanding the applications of computers in the job setting. Electronics Engineering Technology was offered in a co-op education format in September 1987 and is a program them as Selkirk College students and investigate other | university and college calendars for scholarships, bursaries and awards open to all students studying in British Columbia. When planning a budget for an academic year students should consider tuition fees, books and supplies, local transportation, accommodation, travel to and from home if relocating to attend Selkirk College, and assuming some of the r for fir ing their education. The program now requires students to produce evidence of having worked just prior to entering school, or during summer vacation. Volunteer service may fulfill this obligation as does attending a summer session educational program. Details about student obligations may be obtained from the college's Financial Aid Office. Costs may run at about $5,000 to $6,000 per academic year. Single students living at home require less and should plan on spending about $2,000 per academic year. Graduates are awarded significant numbers of advance credits to a professional designation by the Society of Management Accountants and the Certified General A of Canada. Public and private i 4 Canada involved in telecommunications, exploration, industrial electronics, computer systems, business systems, manu- facturing, consumer and industrial sales employ graduate technologists. Elective course in the fourth and fifth semesters allow students to choose either a broad based general program in Electronics or specialization in Computer Hardware and Computer Applications for business and Industry. Business Administration adopts the co-operative ion format beginning Sep 1988. Now entering Selkirk College's Business program can major in one of two specific disciplines; Accouting and Finance or Marketing and General Management. Regardless of which major course of studies is pursued, the program will develop skills in all essential areas of business and industry. Students majoring in Marketing and General Manage- ment learn the skills to function competently in the management environment. Graduates will have attained a working k ledge of physical and management, sales, financial and information systems, and human resource management. A number of advance credits extend to pr i d. as well. Stud ing a pe ive edu- cation diploma program may proudly indicate on their resume the attainment of one year’s relevant work experience in addition to their Selkirk College diploma. .
