By. 8s Castlégar News January 10, 1990 Canadians are energy ‘gluttons' By MARGARET MUNRO Vancouver Sun VANCOUVER (CP) — Canadians are energy hogs, a world leader in per capita consumption of oil, gas and electricity. It's a that also production of 709 million tonnes -of carbon dioxide pollutién in 2005 could be reduced by 128 million tonnes through a series of ‘‘economically at- tractive’’ energy conservation The mea s could save. in-" ranks Canadians among the worst polluters on the planet “We are real gluttons,’’ says B.C Hydro official Bob Crockett, echoing a growing chorus of environmentalists and government officials alarmed by the implications of the country’s ever- increasing appetite for energy. Canadian consumers now use three times more electricity than their coun: terparts in Britain, France and Japan, and 50 per cent more than the average American. The proliferation of video games, home computers and elec- tronically powered gadgets has seen domestic electricity consumption in Canada double since 1960. If the country’s appetite for energy continues to grow at current rates, a host of new power plants and energy megaprojects will be needed to meet the demand. In B.C. Hydro officials predict six energy megaprojects could be needed by 2010. Rivers-will haveto be flooded for hydro dams and coal- burning thermal stations will have to be fired up. The federal government estimates’ that without curbs on energy consum- ption, Canada’s emissions of carbon dioxide pollution will increase by almost 50 per cent within 15 years. Carbon sony. released by the bur- ning of oil, céal, wood and gas, is the most common of the manmade greenhouse gases which are changing the composition of the atmosphere and threatening to heat the world CALLFOR CONSERVATION All of which is prompting environ- mentalists, power utility executives and governments to call for a concer- ted energy conservation effort in this country. Studies prepared for the federal and provincial energy ministers this sum- mer say the projected Canadian annual dustry and consumers an estimated $108 billion on energy bills by the year 2005 Another government study says the country could cuts its projected carbon dioxide emissions in half by 2005 through an aggressive energy conser- vation and alternative energy program which would save estimated $99 billion. But federal energy officials point OUL an aggressive conservation program would mean major changes in the lifestyles of the 330,000 Canadians who.werk in the energy sector, not to mention Canadians whoJike to drive. “They (the environmentalists) are willing to accept as costless significant changes in lifestyle,” says federal energy and mines ministry official Bob Lyman, pointing to dozens of energy- conserving measures laid out in the consultants report The use of fossil fuels for home and commercial heating would have to be cut by 45 per cent. Industry would have to cut its consumption by 24 per cent and the transportation sector by 49 per cent LIST OF CUTS The list of energy saving measures include: Eliminating cars from many city streets, electrifying the country’s ‘rattways, phasing out the use of coal as a fuel for power plants, staggering wotking hours to reduce congestion and urban fuel use, and firing up more small-scale Slowpoke nuclear reactors to help heat residential and commer- cial buildings Lyman says careful analysis‘of the hundreds of options is needed. Mean- time, he says, the government is moving: A new building code is in the works to ensure construction of more energy efficient homes and commer- cial buildings. Government officials Coffee won't keep you warm GUELPH, Ont. (CP) — A cup of coffee may get you moving in the mor ning, but it won't do much to keep you warm, a study by researchers at the University of Guelph suggests They found that although caffeine triggers metabolic functions, it’s not effective in increasing body warmth Subjects given caffeine equivalent to three to four cups of coffee showed elevated adrenalin levels in blood and increased free fatty acids (the major vehicle for fat in the blood), but no in crease in body temperature, says a release from the university “Caffeine starts to trigger events, but the body doesn’t listen,’’ said Prof, Terry Graham i Six participants in the study were given caffeine and then tested while they sat forgwo hours in shorts and T shirts in a room cooled to 5 degrees C The same people were then given a placebo (a pill without caffeine or other active ingredients) and measured under the same conditions on another day. All six were non-caffeine users. “We wanted to see if you could turn up the furnace by turning on the metabolic responses,"’ said Graham But tests showed the subjects con- tinued to use mainly carbohydrate stores in muscles and the liver — even though caffeine made fat more available in the blood — and body temperature did not increase “It would have been a good first-aid trick, if people could take caffeine tablets in the cold,” said Graham He noted that Dr. Andre Vallarand of the Canadian Armed Forces has teported some success with caffeine- like compounds, while liquor has been shown not to be a solution to the cold. ¢ Jack L. And they are working on fuel efficiency standards to force automakers to produce more efficient cars Environmentalists say the pace is too slow and they have launched a national campaign to try and force the issue Meng. They want Canada to become leader in carbon dioxide reduction, as opposed to a world leader in carbon dioxide production.
