Fitness By Jack Alouf We hear a great deal about physical fitness and what we should be doing about it. It's something like the heavy smoker who has been smoking for some 20 years, knows how bad it is for him and knows he should quit but just does not If anybody had asked me several years ago about curling 10 end games Instead of 12 ina national competition, I'm sure I would have told them “it's for the birds.” But I must admit, my thinking is changing. For one thing, they play 10 end. games in’ the. national seniors competition and it hasn't ruined the game. If you think, maybe it's okay for the old men, but not us younger guys, forget it, Those seniors at the national level know what the game is all about. Just take a look at them. sometime and you'll come away. convinced. Secondly, they. play 10 end games in the world champion- ‘ship for the Air Canada Silver Broom. I guess that is what really started'me thinking about it. They play 10 end games in the Silver Broom on arena ice, and they don't seem to have the ice problems we have encountered in recent years in the Brier. If you investigate. the reason, you can only reach the conclusion that since 'a 10 end game is shorter by approxi mately half an hour on: the average, the heat from the is Where Its At! As far as I know, there is not a Smokers’ Anonymous Club in our immediate area, . although I'm sure there is a” need for one. However, when we look at the:area of fitness, there is really no excuse other than’ the fact that the human : animal is basically. lazy. While ino one “can be : ing tied after 10 ends. But in 48 or the 65 games, the leader after 10 ends. was also the’ winner after 12. The quicker the game, the easier it should be for the curlers to maintain maximum concentration. ‘The faster the game, the less time they spend on the ice, and it would give them a little more time to relax: between games, : i Now some years the games are played in an arena that is . reasonably close to the hotel where the curlers stay. But more often than not, it’s a real scramble. to. change after a game, get back to the hotel, have something to eat and then get ready to be back to the rink on time, And: what the curlers would really like is to have a few minutes to relax, to sit down and put their feet up, so that it isn't just one big week-long rat race. ‘They ‘are playing 10 end games now in a lot of the carspiels ‘because they just don't have.time for 12-enders. ‘When you consider all the pluses; faster games, probably better. ice ‘conditions, | and better. overall ‘curling, :), mor mi end games. 2 : -\ Tinow'there will be some arguments against: >.
