Does Coffee Constitute Bribery? A debate has erupted over whether a bribery charge can be pinned on Gov. Robert Ray for handing out Iowa flag lapels to public officials. Towa Attorney-General Richard Turner says a state representative's question on the issue pinpoints the need to clarify existing law on bribery. Towa law states pointedly that it is a felony. to offer or give “anything of value or any benefit toa person serving ina public capacity with intent to influence his actions or judg- ment.” Ray, agreeing that the law represents the pinnacle of am- biguity, has said he thinks the statute is so strict that he might violate it by discussing public business with his wife after taking a cup of coffee from her. Impulses are sent fully fought the crippling pain in his back with drugs and, surgery. Now, he says, feeling good is as simple as twisting a knob. “Everything is beautiful,” said the 47-year-old ex-mecha- nic, who is wired to beat pain. He wears a battery-powered transmitter—about the size of a bar of soap—on his belt. It sends soothing electrical im- pulses to electrodes implanted near his fused and scarred spine. “Without it I couldn't move. I wouldn't be able to walk,” he said in a recent inter- view. Librizzi damaged his back when a 250-pound auto trans- mission fell on him from a work stand in 1967. He has been unable to work since. Eighteen months ago, a Pittsburgh pain specialist im- planted the experimental de- vice in Librizzi and, for the first time in years, he has been able to move free from intense pain. “I can’t say 1 feel normal enough to go out and perform my duties, but at least it gives me the ability to move around,” he said. The electronic nerve sti- mulator uses low-impulse sig- nals to block pain ions in from the fo an antenna attached to Librizzi's skin. A radio signal patches them to receivers surgically implanted under the skin, where fine wires take the impulses to electrodes deep in his body. “I turn it on for 20-minute periods four to eight times a day,” he said. “When the pain gets bad, you turn it up.” Doctors say they're not sure why the transmitter works for Librizzi. Most of the devices installed by Dr. Ruben Tenicela, director of the pain clinic at Presbytérian-Univer- sity Hospital, have failed. He says it is not therapy so I assume it is personal, Please don’t tell me whether it’s right or wrong. I know’ the answer. The lovemaking takes place in his office. He still charges me $50 an hour. What do you think of this? I find it demeaning. You are the one who advised me to "get professional help,” so now I am looking to you for some answers. Shrinking in Miami Dear Miami: What you are getting ig not professional help. Your therapist's conduct is highly unethical and plenty kinky, but at least he is not attempting to disguise it as “therapy.” So—why is he charging you? Since this doctor has had you on the couch (in every sense of the phrase) there's no way you can have a decent professional relationship. Get another shrink. Lf you want to continue to see this bird, that’s your business, but keep it strictly social and don't give him any more money. etek Dear Ann: I'm a man who has been reading your column for years and I don’t hide it under the sports page cither. I read it right out in the open and am not ashamed to say you have helped me a lot. Now I need some personal advice. Please don't let me down, Our wedding date is set and I want everything to be just right. My gal is terrific and we have talked about every problem that might come up in married life. The one thing that bothers me is that my sweetheart wants me to carry her over the threshold on our wedding night. She outweighs me by at least 40 pounds, Question: Should I carry her through head first or feet first? Thanks a Jot for your help. ‘ —Faithful Reader In Spokane Dear Faithful: Carry your bride across the threshold feet first or you might crack her skull. 1 assume, of course, that you are certain you can pick her up. If you have never done it, I suggest you have a dress rehearsal soon. If there's anything a guy doesn't need on his wedding night it’s a hernia. * 8 # Dear Ann: Tomorrow night I won't be going to a family reunion because I can't open my right eye. My boyfriend hit me. It was over nothing at all. Actually, I couldn't remember his friend's name and he insisted I “forgot on purpose.” I must say he was awfully nice about it right after. He took me to a swell steak place and bought me two T-bones—one to eat and one for my eye. Tam 17. Mike is 19. He is really a neat guy except for this one fault. He has hit me a couple of times before but never where it showed. Now I'm afraid if my folks guess what happened they will make me stop seeing Mike. I don't want to stop. He's got lots of good qualities that make up for this bad one. I need your advice. —Hayward Reader Dear Reader: What kind of advice? You've already told me what a “neat guy” Mike is and that you don't want to stop seeing him. You've also told me he has hit you before. So now I will tell you that he will undoubtedly hit you again. Don't be surprised if one day he clobbers you over something really important and puts you in the hospital. SAVINGS...Pan-Abode pre- and labour costs and the savings are passed on to you. CONFIDENTIAL REPORT: Kathy Prinze finally broke her silence for the first time to tell of the tragic life and death of her husband Freddie Prinze, who killed himself in the prime of his career, a hopeless drug addict. She believes that when Freddie put the gun to his head, “He didn't know what he was doing. He was so stoned he had no idea the gun was loaded. His death was an accident, not a suicide. Stoned on what? Cocaine and Quaaludes.' Prinze, the hottest comedian in America, shot himself in January of last year. For Kathy, some of the best memories are painful now. Atter the birth of their only child, Freddie had an affair with his leading lady Brooke Mills, from an NBC-TV movie. And through it all, also, were the guns. Freddie was fascinated by guns. He loved to scare people and he loved to scare himself. Once, jokingly, he held a pistol to his head and pulled the trigger. Another time during an argument, he put the gun to Kathy's cheek and squeezed the trigger four times. In the end, she believes it was this morbid sense of humor in lethal conspiracy with the drugs that cost him his life.
