Castlegar News September 25, 1988 SPORTS Canesco sets record 40 homers, 40 steals MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jose Canseco has put together a season like no other in baseball history after becoming the sport's first 40-40, man. So what can he possibly do for an encore? “Even though I've done it this year, it doesn’t mean I won't do it again,” Canseco says modestly. “Even if you don’t shoot for it, the consistency level that you're at will help you a lot.” How about 200 hits this American. League season to go with his 41 homers, 40 stolen bases, club-record 120 runs batted in and 118 runs scored? “That's going to get in the way of me resting for the playoffs, so basically I don't think that's going to be achieved,” said the Oakland Athletics outfielder, who was 18 hits short with a week left. Then why not 50-50 next season? “| don't say it's impossible, just unlikely,” added the six-foot-three, 230-pounder now in only his third full major league season at age 24. Canseco began his quest of 40 homers and 40 stolen bases during spring training, even though he didn't realize at the time that no other major leaguer. had ever combined speed and power in such a way. HITS HOMERS He already had 40 homers Friday night and then got steals No. 39 and 40 at County Stadium. Suddeiily he was the charter member of a very exclusive club. “The game's been played for 100 years and nobody's ever done it,” said Oakland manager Tony LaRussa, whose team already has wrapped up the American League West title. “It is a very si because he's done it in the framework of winning ball games,” LaRussa added. “He hasn't been hitting cheap home runs and he hasn't been stealing cheap bases.” Canseco, who also hit homer No. 41 Friday night, will let others put his into Soccer final today By GARY KINGSTON Quinn, who was favoring a sore ankle at practice this week, was That Vancouver win was tainted by a Steelers’ own goal ai and a dubious Canadian VANCOUVER — The Canadian ejected in the second half of last penalty kick award that led to Soccer League's best goalkeeper started the season as a Vancouver 86er, And when today's champion- ship game ends, he'll still be on the Vancouver roster. But in the meantime, Paul Dolan hopes to lead the Hamilton Steelers to a CSL title over those same 86ers at Swangard Stadium in nearby Bur. naby. “Sure, it probably means a little more to me,” says Dolan, who. nine games into the season was loaned to the winless Steelers by charitable historical perspective. “It means a lot because it shows the improvement I've made between 1986 and 1988,” Canseco said. “I don't think I'm going to be the person to fit it in (baseball history).” “T think the fans and the press will put it in some kind of category.” Ten players have hit at least 30 homers and stolen at least 30 bases in one season, including Davis of the Cincinnai Reds, who had 37 homers nad 50 steals in 1987. Bobby Bonds, who had five 30-30 seasons, had 43 steals and 39 homers for the San Francisco Giants in 1973. ey! So it now will be former 49er Jeff Kemp against a San Francisco team that's Still playing musical quarter- backs — Joe Montana went all the way Sunday and threw three inter. ceptions, drawing criticism even from Walsh, one of his staunchest defenders. He'll start Sunday, but Steve Young will be in the bullpen from the start. In other games today, it wilt be Atlanta at Dallas; Chicago at Green Bay; Cleveland at Cincinnati; Miami at Indanapolis; New England at Houston; the New York Jets at De- troit;, Philadelphia at Minnesota; Pittsburgh at Buffalo; Tampa Bay at New Orlenas; San Diego at Kansas City; Washington at Phoenix; Los Angeles Rams at the New York Giants. The Raiders are at Denver in the Monday night game. RAMS WINNING The Rams should get their first real test against the Giants. Los’ An: geles has beaten Green Bay, Detroit and the Raiders and piled up 21 sacks en route, including five by ex-Giant Gary Jeter in their 22-17 win over the Raiders. The Gaints are lucky to be 2-1 — they're 27th in the league on defence and 24th on offence. But they're starting to come together as all-pros Carl Banks and Mark Bavaro shake the effects of the holdout-caused early season malaise; Leonard Mar- shall shakes off the effects of a groin injury and Joe Morris, who had 107 yards rushing against Dallas, adjusts to a rebuilt offensive line. Like the Giants, the Browns are iucky to be where they are — they scored their first two touchdowns of the season in Monday night's 23-17 general manager Buzz Parsons, who already had veteran Sven Habermann in goal. Dolan, 22, and four other new re cruits helped the Steelers go unbeat- en in 19 of their next 20 games. The lanky Dolan had the league's best goals-against-average at 0.98. And in a delightful bit of irony, he was named Friday to the CSL all-star team and will lead Hamilton in a dream showdown with the power- house 86ers, whose 27-game un- beaten strewak includes a 4-2 victory over the Steelers at Swangard Sta- dium a month ago. “I think the pressure is off from the eastern final (Hamilton beat Toronto 1-0), which was more dram- atic in terms of if you lose that you're done, whereas here it's the end of the season anyway,” says Dolan, sport ing a spotty facial stubble he calls his playoff beard. NO PRESSURE “The pressure now is on Van couver. We've got nothing to lose. They're the ones trying to protect the unbeaten streak.” Vancouver playing-coach Bobby Lenarduzzi, who was also named to the all-star starting 11 as a defender, watched his charges go through a spirited practice Thursday and doesn't agree. “Rather than have it be a burden, we've gone the other way,” says Lenarduzzi, who at 33 will be playing his last game of a distinguished 18-year professional career. “It’s going to be a booster for us to realize that we've done as well as we have done. “All things must come to an end, but there's no reason for it to come to an end now.” There is little to choose between the two clubs. The 86ers led the league with 84 goals, Hamilton was second with 64. The Steelers allowed the fewest goals (28), Vancouver was second with 30. The 86ers are led up front by the dynamic scoring duo of John Catliff and Domenic Mobilio, two more Van- couver all-star forward selections who tied for the CSL scoring lead with 22 goals each. “We have to try to deny them (the ball),” says scrappy Hamilton mid. fielder Brian Quinn, a former Irish international recruited from the Major Indoor Soccer League. “Once they get jt, they're very clever with the ball. If we deny their supply, then we'll be in good shape.” month's loss to the 86ers. another 86er goal. Weekend Wrap-up win over Ind lis. The off line seems improved and Mike Pagel may be a decent interim replacement for Bernie Kosar. In another interesting contest, Pittsburgh plays at Buffalo. The Bills, 3-0, have scored just two touchdowns all season, outscored their opponents by just eight points and played without all-pro defensive end Bruce Smith. This could be breakout time — the Steelers had five turnovers and sur- rendered six sacks to the Bengals, whose defence isn’t in Buffalo's class. ephaey, ictars ABI. oper.
