Trail. The centre has been serving
the needs of the West Kootenay
since 1972.

Counsellor to discuss abuse

Shirley Turcotte will speak Oct. 12
in Nelson as part of the larger
weekend-long conference of the
province-wide Family Court commit-
tee annual meeting.

Turcotte, a victim of sexual abuse,

Turcotte, born in Manitoba in 1952,
grew up as a victim of sexual, physical
and emotior abuse. She is now a
registered clinical counsellor in Van-
couver and is in demand by coun-

America, conference organizers said
in a news release.

The program will begin at 7 p.m.
with greetings from the Province of
B.C., Mayor Gerald Rotering for the
City of Nelson, and Rev. Calvin
Brown for the Nelson Family
Court/Youth Justice committee.

Kinnaird WI members
receive several reports

The first meeting of the Kinnaird
Women’s Institute opened with ac-
counts of recent trips taken by various
members.

The countries visited included
Spain, England and the United States.
A draw was held for two souveniers
brought from Spain and pictures
displayed.

It was noted that Melony Streliev
was awarded the Kinnaird WI
scholarship and cookbook in June.
This is presented each year to a Kin-
naird Junior secondary school
student.

Fundraising plans for the fall
session will be a table at the Robson
flea market Oct. 28 and a bake table
Nov. 3 at the Blueberry craft fair.

Three members attended a recent
workshop at New Denver sponsored
by the West Kootenay district. Topics
covered were varied and informative.

Paula Robbior of Nelson spoke on
@ project to help wives who are vic-
tims of assault by their husbands.
Robson is currently heading up this
Project which is based in Nelson but
covers Trail, Castlegar, Nelson and
surrounding areas. She also told of
the Transition House in Trail and of
the need there for bedding and
clothing.

Michael Jessen, recycling coor-
dinator for the Nelson sub-region of
the Regional District of Central
Kootenay, gave a presentation of cut-
ting down on the amount of garbage
People throw out.

Jessen spoke of the recycling depots
being planned for the district but said
it will be a few years before these will
be operational.

The best of the day-long workshop
was rounded out with a talk on the
importance of early detection of
breast cancer and a demonstration of
how to make a pine cone wreath on a
wicker plate.
