Workshop to focus } on access Increasingly, people with disabilities are seeking an active in- dependent lifestyle. Accessible en- vironments are essential to full par- ticipation. Building . Accessil Communities is a one-day workshop to bring together the key people involved in building communities. It will be held March 8 at the Castlegar Sandman Inn banquet room from 8:30 a.m. to 4p.m. While the B.C. Building Code sets and Trail’s Disabled for significant barriers to full access for people with limited mobility still exist, the Abilities Awareness Ad- visory Committee of Castlegar says. Often, those who build or renovate, and those who approve plans, simply don’t have enough information on what is needed to make buildings barrier-free. The Building Accessible Com- munities workshop, hosted jointly by the Abilities Awareness Advisory Cancer Society plans awareness night Nine volunteers with the Castlegar Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society, and ore guest from Salmo attended a meeting Feb. 12 at the Health Unit. Dorothy Martini, unit treasurer and In Memoriam chairman, was the Castlegar unit representative at the Kootenay district annual general meeting in September in Kimberley The president, Ruby Marsh, atten- ded the B.C. and Yukon division an- nual general meeting in Vancouver in January where the society’s cam- paign focusing on the dangers of tobacco was the theme of the Program. Also in January, nine local volun- teers attended a patient service workshop held at the Sandman Inn. Volunteers from Rossland, Trail, Nelson and Salmo attended. An invitation has been received from the Lion’s Club to participate in its 1991 Trade Fair. If the ap- Plication for donation of a booth is accepted, the unit will be able to par- ticipate. An updated video catalogue has been received. The public is remin- ded that these can be borrowed with no charge. A video, Your Skin and the Sun, was shown during the meeting. The president reported that the Welcome Wagon, which visits newcomers to the city, is including some of the Cancer Society’s pam- phlets in its package. The April campaign was discussed. The 1990 campaign brought in $12,757. From October 1989 to Sep- tember 1990, $7,914 was spent locally to assist cancer patients with transportation, lodging and drugs. Plans are being made to hold os Cancer Society Awareness Night on March 26, at the Legion Hall. Dr. N. Scotland, of Trail will be the guest speaker and his topic will be chemotherapy. The public will find it an informative evening. pase ian ee ADS” $1 for 1 i words for SPECIAL ON CLASSIFIED ADS sae NG CLASSIPICATION HEAR BOTTOM OF Th AD #8 oF 12 noon on Tuesday.
