Cadet training puts youths up in the air Several members of the Castlegar Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets recently spent a day learning orienteering. Orienteering combines using a compass with ground navigation. In addition to the orienteering, the Cadets also received instruction in weeks in length. It includes basic camps, specialist courses in leader- training of the cadets and the ad- siinianrenion of the squadron. the Castlegar ship, and air traffic control, along with gliding and powered pilot training that allow the cadets to earn their civilian private pilot licence. Senior Cadets may also attend international and bush survival, a P exercise for a weekend bush exercise later in the spring. Bush exercises are just one of the types of activities that Air Cadets participate in. Others include gliding, flying, sports weekends and summer training. The summer training is up to six visits. Air Cadets are young men and women between the ages of 12 and 18. Air Cadets meet every Tuesday night in the Kinnaird Hall in Castlegar at 6:30 p.m. New Cadets are always welcome. Every year, all Cadets receive fami ization rides in both private and military aircraft. During these rides, the cadets are involved in the preflight inspection of the aircraft, the navigation, and in some cases, even the piloting. Art show expands For the past eight years, the Langham Cultural Centre has highlighted the artistic abilities of the upper Kootenay Lake school children through the children’s art show. This year, a new concept has come into its own, thanks to the areas, allowing participants not only to hear other top calibre students but allowing them to perform in a com- pletely non-competitive atmosphere.
