But the Miner is nervous lest this good material should be overlooked in favor of ‘machine men.”" - Apparently the machine to which it refers is the Conservative organization, for no other machine has anything to do with the choice of Conservative candidates. The term “machine” seems to be ap- plied in a disparaging sense, as one might refer to the genial, brainy editor of the Miner as a ‘‘pencil- shover.” The machine is run by the whole body of Conservative voters. - ~The association as a whole chooses its executive committee and, if the Miner refers to that body as a ma- chine, itis disparaging the whole organization. Every registered Conservative will have a voice in the make-up of the machine, com- monly called the convention, which will nominate the candidate. The machine which calls itself the Lib- eral-Conservative association sent to the Nelson convention a delega- tion which voted that the party should rely ‘‘not solely upon party part, it is free to contess that either its notions of business differ in the most radical manner from Mr. Cot- ton’s or else that the only possible conclusion to be arrived at from a survey of the Cotton administration is that he made perhaps about the worst mess of the business of gov~ ernment in the history of British parliamentary institutions.” EDITORIAL NOTES. Mr. Whitney fired a bomb into the Ross camp in the Ontario legis- lature by filing three affidavits of John G. Pritchett, confessing his part id the West Elgin frauds and telling how he. had been subsidized to flee the country. It is proposed by the government to increase the preference given to British trade to 3334% of the tariff, to grant free trade to Trinidad and to put beet sugar machinery on the free list, Martin is accused by the Prov- ince of seeking to secure Martin delegates from outside districts to the Vancouver convention, with the ulterior hope if he cannot thereby The.
