SPORTS w__ Cast New _Hr Ski team picks made OTTAWA (CP) — Todd Brooker and Laurie Graham are the only two skiers named to the A team of the national Alpine ski team for the coming World Cup sea- son. Brooker, of Paris, Ont., made it by winning one of the 12 World Cup downhill events last season and fin- ishing in the top 10 six time’ to be rated seventh in the world by the ruling Feder- ation Internationale de Ski. Graham, of Inglewood, Ont., is ranked third among women downhillers after fin- ishing fourth at Vail, Colo., and third and first in events at Alberta's Sunshine Valley. Graham, who found a new lease on life as the season wound down last year, will be ably backed by B team mem- bers Karen Stemmle of Aur- ora, Ont., 19th on the FIS list, Liisa Savijarvi of Brace- bridge, Ont., 22nd, Diana Haight of Fruitvale, 29th despite severe injuries, Kar- en Percy of Banff, Alta., 37th and Andrea Bedard of Sut- ton, Que. On the women’s C team are Kerrin Lee of Rossland, Jos. Golf from rain to shine The first round of the Pat Gordon (net) competition started in the rain Tuesday but ended in bright sunshine. A few of the leaders are Judy Wayling with 76, Ruth Trickey 77 and Clarice Mec- Kinnon with 78. Least putts is Wayling with 30 followed by McKinnon and Laverne Makortoff. The second round will be played on Tuesday. Tee times are posted with the Pro. Those ladies wanting their time, wanting to join in the competition or just want- ing to golf with the ladies should phone the pro shop. In the Pat Gordon ladies pick their best scores out of the two days or a one day score only. This Ladies Day will also be another Aces of Aces qualifying round so try and join M. Moroso and G. Mukanik earned the honor by carving a new record for most hits in one game. He collected six safeties in the Orioles’ 27-4 thrashing of Grand Forks. Mukanik also got six hits, including three singles, one double and two home runs for 13 total bases. He also scored five runs to equal the KISBL's single game record for runs scored. The two coaches were given awards at a wind-up dinner of the outgoing ex- ecutive of the Minor Hockey Association. This is a new award for minor hockey. The plaques were donated by optometrist Marvin LeRoy. The two recipients have done a lot in minor hockey both this year and in past years. Doug Coulson hag been in- volved in minor hockey for 12 years. Over the past year he coached in the Juvnile div. ‘3 rep to various minor hockey meetings in the West Koot- enay. Coulson was also respon- sible for ing and get- “Doug was the kind of coach that you would call a model coach. You never heard a bad word about Doug. It was always praise from both parents and play- ers.” Coulson is an electrician ting people for the 1984-85 minor hockey executive, as well as running the election with Mike Byers. Coulson has also been in both coaching and the ex ecutive end of minor hockey for the 12 years he has been involved. “Whenever help was need- ed for anything, .Doug..was always ready and willing to help out,” says president Wayne Barr. int e foreman at Cominco. Lewis has been involved in minor hockey in Castlegar for the past three years, holding various coaching and ex- ecutive positions. During the 1984-85 season he was division manager for the Pee Wees, coached a Pee Wee house team-as well as the Pee Wee.B team. He was also vice-president of Minor Hockey, head of the newly- formed booster club and was responsible for starting and operating the Lions Casino for Minor Hockey Week. “Since Jim has come to Castlegar (about four years ago) from Fort St. John, he has taken a great interest in Castlegar Minor Hockey as well as many other commun- ity services (minor ball, Lions),” said Barr. “Jim's interest especially in this newly-formed Minor Hockey Booster Club has been outstanding. I know Jim has had help from other people but it is with his leadership that is has proven financially beneficial already.” Lewis holds a management position at B.C. Tel.
