To some he is a hero and a saint; to others, a pain in the neck. He spends every waking hour of the day trying to shelter the homeless, estimated by state, city and volunteer organizations to number between two million and three million people in the United States. He secured federal funds to repair this building by going on dramatic, near-suicidal hunger strikes. Drinking sour-smelling wine from a Styrofoam cup — a friend recommended wine to kill a cold — Snyder snorts with surprise when a reporter asks what he does in his spare time: “Nothing. This is it. You don’t take holidays when your friends are dying.” He means it. LIVES IN SCHOOL Snyder lives in prison-like quarters in the drab and dusty school with the down-and-out people whose main voice in this powerful, politically preoccupied city is his voice — soft but blunt. He uses it on the telephone, talking to lawyers handling a court fight over showers, real beds, washing machines, a bit of privacy, a little dignity. He uses it in speeches, instructing people in other communities how to help the homeless, and in interviews in hopes of convincing individuals that the people they brush off as bums or lunatics on the street are human beings above all. “We shouldn't be stepping over bodies and going about our business,” Snyder said in an interview. Supplements not ideal CALGARY (CP) — Cal cium supplements are better than nothing, but are not the ideal way for women to get the calcium they need to help prevent bone diseases such as osteoporosis, an American medical researcher says. There are a number of rea sons why natural foods are better than supplements as a course of calcium, Dr. Robert Heaney, a _ professor at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., said in an interview For one thing, a lot of nu trients are needed for bone”) health, but the only one put in calcium supplements is calcium, he said “You may be deficient in some of the others,” he said. . How are you going to know that?” Another problem is that Buy: people who don't get enough calcium are often marginal in terms of other nutrient in take, said Heaney, who was in Calgary recently to con duct a seminar. Nuts, fish and dairy prod ucts are among the best nat ural sources of calcium, said Heaney, who has published a number of papers on calcium and its relationship to good bone health. An adequate intake of the nutrient can help prevent some forms of osteoporosis, or bone loss, a condition which primarily affects mid dle-age, post-menopausal women, he said. The human skeleton is the basic calcium reservoir in the body, and if there is a shor. tage, the body will turn to this reservoir to meet its needs, Heaney explained. It's estimated osteoporosis affects one in four Canadian women over the age of 50. AUTOMOTIVE Buy / lease any truck or RV °. Jtease 2s / diese! Most people veer away from them. Wearing an old army jacket and faded jeans, the long-haired Snyder still looks like one of the organizers of the antiwar movement that he was in the Vietnam era. He gave up his Madison Avenue job in advertising as an empty, unsatisfying path in life. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Snyder, the product of a broken marriage, started work at age 16. Ten years later, he dropped out of the establishment world and wound up, in 1973, working with a peace organization in Washington called the Community for Creative Non-Violence. HAVE PHILOSOPHY “After the (Vietnam) war, the community began to blend the elements of resistance and social service into one,” Snyder said, adding that the organization's members today apply the same philosophy to helping the homeless as they did to resisting war. “You can't kill or hurt people or wipe out people who are not distant from you, who are not strangers to you.” It's this kind of motto, along with a strong but low-keyed religious drive, that keeps a man like Snyder from exploding in frustration or giving up in hopelessness over the mountain of difficulties in getting help for the homeless. By the latest count, there are 100,000 emergency shelter beds for the homeless in the United States. That's a small number by anyone's count of the homeless — whether it's the 350,000 estimated by the federal government or as many as three million estimated by Snyder's group and organizations representing some state and municipal governments. The shelter where Snyder lives houses about 600 people per night, but will hold about 1,500 when renovations are completed. Planned as a model for other emergency facilities, it is also supposed to have a medical unit and volunteer counselling to help homeless people get back on their feet. NEED HELP “Being on the street is a lot like being in quicksand — you need a lot of help to get out,” Snyder said. “How do you get a job when you list the streets as your address and how do you get a call-back from employers? “If you manage to get a job and save some money and find housing, who's going to rent to you when your previous address is a street corner?” It’s a vicious circle and Snyder says the long-term solution is more community services for the mentally disabled and more affordable housing for the poor, an increasingly rare commodity in cities like Washington with high occupancy rates and stiff competition for what housing there is. “know that doesn't have to be expensive to look good,” says Pat Thavenot, a vice- president with the News- paper Advertising Bureau who gives seminars on re- tailing strategies for store owners. “We have now the edu- cated consumer who understands that price does not always mean value,” Thavenot said dur- ing a recent stay in Kiteh- ener for a seminar. She points to herself as an example of that con- sumer: “Here I am wearing these expensive black lea- ther pants with a $21 sweater that I just = It's a cotton knit, made, big and roomy oa it's wash and wear. Why should I pay more for a sweater just because it has a designer label?” Thavenot, who has dec- ades of experience in fash- ion with Saks Fifth Avenue Buyers dishwasher, pliances — ranges, refrigerators — is ning January 19, 1987.
