210 ‘Saturday, May 2, 199; God’s gift is for everyone @ Annaul trade fair provides interesting insight into people Last weekend saw the 16th Annual West Kootenay Trade Fair in Castlegar. I was there for most of it, as the Presbyterian Church maintained a booth at the fair. For the second year in a row, in addition to providing information on the ministry of Presbyterian Churches throughout the Kootenays. and around the world, we gave our free cups of coffee to any who wished a bit of refreshment. I figure we served well over 600 cups during the weekend. I was interested in the reac- tions of many of the people who paused at our booth, and noticed the “Free Coffee”. Some immediately passed by. They weren't interested. Perhaps they had recently had a cup elsewhere? Maybe they just didn’t want any? Others passed on with a skeptical look, their attitude saying: “There’s gotta be a catch. You don’t get something for nothing.” Still others stopped, noted it was free, fig- ured “Why not, it’s free”, helped themselves to a cup and moved on, without ever lifting their eyes to acknowl- Bluetop BACON-CHEESE DELUXE WITH FRIES All Our Prices Include the G.S.T. Then there were some who were most grateful, but just couldn’t accept it as a free gift. They wanted to pay for it. Murray GARVIN Re ‘Which response is yours?’ We explained that it really was free, that it was no big deal on our part, that (as our” sign announced) Safeway was ae providing the coffee, we were just providing the service. When some persisted and left money on the table, we decid- ed to put it towards the foster child our Castlegar Women’s Group is supporting in India. Then there were,.of course, those who stopped for a cup, thanked us, stayed and chat- ted for a few moments, and went on their way, all ofus en- riched by the experience. I couldn't help thinking that all those various reac- tions are so like the responses of many people to God’s great gift of love to us in Jesus Christ. Some just aren't inter- ested. They’re getting ‘their satisfaction in life elsewhere and reject God’s gift of life. Others won’t accept it be- cause they can’t believe it’s true. Human nature doesn’t give something for nothing, why would God? And, unfortunately, there are some who accept God’s . blessings without acknowl- edging him or showing in their lives any gratitude to him. And there are those who seem to feel they have to earn God’s favor, to pay for it in some way that makes them feel “good” or unobligated. And all this time, all we have to do is to accept God’s free gift of life in Jesus Christ, and to live gratefully and gra- ciously in friendship with him and with others. _ Alife lived in grace. Such a contrast to all these other re- sponses. Which response is yours? COMMERICAL INSURANC! If you own a business or : retail outlet, you owe it to yourself to protect your interests.
