NEWS STAFF It’s easy for onlookers to be a little nonchalant about another Castlegar Golf Club Champion- ship victory for Bill Perehudoff and Diony McArthur. They’re expected to win, right? Maybe. But neither player is known to take any game of golf lightly — which just may be one of the reasons they keep winning. “I think it’s about nine or 10, I’m not sure,” said Bill Perehudoff, when asked to recall how many times he’s won the club title. Whatever the exact count(not even the pros at the golf course could say), Perehudoff added another to it last weekend. Perehudoff shot a two-round total of 149 (73,76) at the Castle- gar Golf Course to win the tourna- ment by ome stroke over Ron Perrier. Aaron Stoushnow shot 72-82- 154 to finish third in the 26-player event. “Tm competitive, just because I’ve won it (the club champion- ship) a few times, I don’t approach it any differently than any other competition,” Perehudoff, said. McArthur shot 86 Saturday, and came back with an 82 Sunday to win the title for the second straight year. And for the second year in a row. she won it by a stroke over Diane McAfee. This time it came down to the 18th hole Sunday’ where McArthur came up even on the Diane Bill McAfee Perehudoff the par 5 and McAfee, who led by a stroke after the first round Saturday, bogeyed. Denise Pottle was third in the 24-player field with a two-round total of 86-86-172. “I don’t know what it is that they have (that keeps them winning),” said Castlegar Golf Course Pro (and Diony’s husband) Denny McArthur. “Whatever it is, And they win it, again I wish I could do it. I’d like to go out there and win as often as those guys do.” McArthur said neither his wife nor Perehudoff were among the top handicappers on the course last weekend, which just shows that they can pull their game together when it counts. “She probably played as good a game (Sunday) as she has all year,” McArthur said. Perehudoff, 55, said as he gets older the victories get sweeter. “It’s more fun to win it now than a few years ago, because now there are a lot of young guys always trying to knock me off.” The tables will turn on Perehudoff June 17-19 as he becomes one of those relatively. young guys when he plays in his’ first B.C. Seniors Championship in Victoria. News file photo Brian De Biasio of Nelson has hoisted the Sunflower Open championship trophy three of the past four years and is a favorite to do it again at the Castlegar Golf Course this weekend. Sunflower favorite is a cool customer i Nelson’s Brian De Biasio is looking for his fourth Sunflower Open title in five years. NEWS STAFF Brian De Biasio won't be the longest hitter or the most aggressive player in the 31st Sunflower Open this weekend. But when the last ball is holed on the 18th green at the Castlegar Golf Course Sunday, no one will be surprised if the Nelson resident brings in the tourney’s lowest score — again. “On our course you have to be consistent and patient, and he’s both,” said Sunflower chairman Brian Turlock. “He keeps the ball in play and he waits for his chances. And when he gets the chances he usually capitalizes on them,” Turlock said. De Biasio, who has won the tournament three of the last four years including last year, has proven that he doesn’t need too many chances at the Sunflower. “There are guys in the tournament who are longer hitters and have more exciting} games to watch, but he keeps| winning, so I guess that says something,” Turlock said. Among the local favorites who will challenge De Biasio are Bill Perehudoff, Ron Perrier, Aaron Stoushnow and Danny Walker. As usual, the tournament has attracted a host of local and out-of-town professionals who will be among the 220 golfers in the field. Castlegar pros Steve} Johnston, Denny McArthur and Kevin Biln will play, as will Creston pro Randy Panton. The dark horse player in the two-day, 36-hole event, according to Turlock, is 14-year- old junior Marty Carew, who is the first junior to play in the Sunflower in eight years. The tourney gets under way at the par 72 course Saturday. Sunday’s championship flight tees off at about noon. Need amortgag We'll make it happen. e?
