It’s all Elementary

Castlegar Track and Field ath-
lete Angela Binnie likes summer
but she is actually more partial to
spring. That's because the 12-

year-old Binnie has returned from
the B.C. Elementary Provincial
Track and Field Championships
in Richmond with two medals
and a top ten finish in her favorite
event, the high jump.

ing from across the province. Her
best placing overall came in the
shotput where she came in second
as part of a 52-girl field. She also
came through with a bronze
medal in the triple jump.

Before leaving for Richmond,
Binnie felt her strongest event
was the high jump. She had post-
ed impressive results. at the Kam-
loops Centennial Interior
Championships a week earlier
and was hoping to repeat: her per-

from her heat she had lost some

seventh overall which is good but

“Tt wasn't that great of a meet
for me,” said Binnie. “I wasn’t
really performing at my best in
any of the events.”

Over the past four years at the
B.C. Elementary Championships
Binnie, representing both Kin-
naird Elementary and K.MLS., has
won 17 medals and five ribbons
for top ten finishes. This was her

last year of competing at the ele-
mentary level and she is now
looking forward to making her
mark in the high school ranks
along with her sister Nicolle.
Angela Binnie’s next action
will come in July in the Jack
Brow Memorial in Kelowna. She
will also be taking part in a

Junior Development Camp in
Kamloops and the Junior Pen-
tathlon in Chilliwack before the
season is Over.

Three official selectors were
on hand to pick the «lite players
and four were selected from the
Kootenays. Forward Catherine
Cmi and goalie Evans will find
their way to an elite under-14
camp next month in Vancouver
while Archambault and Michelle
Kooznetsoff will go to the
under- 16 camp.

“Michelle has outstanding
aggression and speed,” said
Tournament Director and Head
Selector Verna Chernoff. “Nikki
[Archambault] is a natural goal
scorer and has fine stick work
inside the circle. Both of them
are excellent team players.

“Catherine's hand-eye coor-
dination was as good as any
player on the field [Sunday].
She sets up a lot of scoring
chances and has a natural abili-
ty to get herself free to get the
pass off. Maireille is a goal-
keeper. She is very solid and
steady. She is also totally
unflustered and confident.”

Unfortunately, the four play-
ers, all from Castlegar, don’t
automatically make the B.C.
squads. There is a rigorous set of
try-outs that must be survived
first. But even still, it was an
honor for all of them just to be
selected and given the opportuni-
ty to compete at a higher level.

Overall, the entire event went
off without a hitch and Chernoff
was more than happy to be a part
of bringing top quality field
hockey to Castlegar.

“It was an exciting tourna-
ment,” said Chernoff. “It was
great to see this type of elite ath-
lete playing in our area. I was
pleased with everything that
went on.”

As for Clow, she hopes to
make a few changes next year
and field a stronger and more
experienced team. She hopes to
do that by forming the team a lit-
tle sooner and competing in a
few tournaments leading up to

All too often seniors
are overlooked, treated
like second-rate citizens,
or flat-out ignored.

vast resources of

knowledge and
good old common sense go
unrecognized and untapped.

But that’s changing, thanks
in part to a senior’s buddy
program between Twin
Rivers Elementary school stu-
dents and residents at Moun-
tain View Lodge.

/When the silver threads of
youth entwine with the gold-
en threads of wisdom, a lumi-
nescent fabric of love and
understanding is woven.

For the third year in a row
Grade 6 students have visited
residents at the intermediate
care unit on a weekly basis.

Recreation coordinator
Wendy Riley said that at the
beginning of the school year
students submitted a short
biography which is then used
to “match” a student with
their “gray buddies.”

These matches, said Riley,
have turned out well.”There
was one boy who said he was
an actor. So I thought he must
be a real ham. We matched
him with a resident who had
a stroke and can’t speak
They’re doing real well.”

But it’s not just the seniors
who benefit from the pro-

gram, explained Riley.

“The kids get a real under-
standing of what life is like in a
facility and our guys look for-
ward to seeing them. There’s
lots of good camaraderie.”

And all one has to do is look
around to see evidence of that
camaraderie. A silver head
bowed close to a student as the
two talk about the week's activ-
ities; a pair of young hands
gently pushing a wheelchair
throughout the courtyard; a
game of darts between a young
boy and an elderly man all
speak of the closeness devel-
oped between the buddies.

Tricia Craft, 12, said the
buddy program helps her
better understand a genera-
tion which is literally years
removed from her that of
her peers.

“It’s an experience spend-
ing time with the elderlies.”

But the experience is just as
enriching for the residents as
it is for the students.

With nostalgia evident in
her eyes Mountain View res-
ident Rhoda Arton, who
raised four daughters, spoke
about the personal benefit of
the program.

“It goes back to me and
my little girls. I raised four
you know.”
