Recent statistics show there were 48,299 people injured in motor vehicle accidents in B.C, in 1994, Fatalities from motor vehi- cle accidents topped 500, Highways minister Jackie Pement said there were 11,300 crashes which were directly attributed to unsafe speed last year - an increase of 7,5 per cent over the 10,543 crashes reported in 1993, Last year, speed-related crashes claimed 194 lives. But there is some good news for B.C. residents, said Pement, Alcohol-related accidents declined to 2.9 per cent, which resulted in 159 deaths. Pement said the highly-suc- cessful CounterAttack program of drinking-driving, but said despite those stitistics, 1994 acci- dent rates are much too high In response to the increase in crashes, the B.C, government is implementing new strategies aimed at three high-risk factors; alcohol, speed and driver inexpe- rience.
