-~30- portant pieces are often left on inundated archaeological sites by those who are ‘type! searching and (2) the original location of yi & g + artifacts is not remembered by those who heave a collection of any numerical size and bring nome teverything'’. Those collectors who are selective in the types of artifacts they collect and who have small collections, usually remember the exact location of each and 5 ¥ we tried educating several local collectors as to-proper colle particularly those with fairly large collections. An alphasetic-numeric system was proposed as a temporary procedure for recording artifact locat- ions. For example, for sites visited by collectors in the Burton — area we suggested assigning tne designation: 'Bt, for the Edgewood area: ‘fh, for t kuso area: ‘'N', ete. For specific sites | collected in these areas we sugzested numbers be assigned to each ite according to various schemes. Thus, 'Braceys' might be given the designation: ‘tHIt, MeCombes Field: 'tH2! ete. We then: informed ~ Me collectors how to label artifacts according to this system using ink and clear nail volish. Two local collectors, Keith Edgell and a 3 ie) + ? Marvel Milne, both of Edgewood, had developed a similar system prior to our visit to the Arrow Lakes. The end resuit of amateur collecting has been: {1) The total surface remova selected disturbed s (2) Negligible to moderate destruction of existing - archaeological sites through dig es. (3) Desire to go to otner carts of the province to collect.
