Heather at 365-5490 or Ginny at 365-5549 wh” VWetone Vi SINCE 1930 a fon Conflict vivid in Nicaraguan’s memory Tools for Peace is extending an in- vitation to the community to meet a young Nicaraguan student who will talk about his life in that strife-torn Central American country. The meeting is scheduled for Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Castlegar United Church. Erick Rene Olivas Obregon grew up in the small rural village of Regidillo just 17 kilometres north west of the city of Esteli, Nicaragua, Tools for Peace says in a news release. He spent most of his life working on the farm during the day and going to school at night. Prior to the revolution of 1979, however, there was very little opportunity for Poor rural families to send their children to school. Erick remembers how many people in his community were forced to work on the farms of the, large land owners, never to break the cycle of poverty and afraid to speak out against injustice for fear or the repression of dictator Somoza’s national guard. Although Erick was only seven years old during the revolution he remembers it vividly, Tools for Peace says. After the Sandinista victory which his family helped to bring about, the people in his area benefit- ed from the many programs of the new government such as the literacy program, greater access to education, health care, and, most important for the farmers, land reform that allowed people like Erick’s family to work their own lands. Ever since the revolution, however, the northern rural regions of Nicaragua have been under attack by the contras with the financial and military support of the United States, Tools for Peace says. Erick saw first hand the effects of the con- tra military attacks and so by the time he was 15 he decided to volun- teer for the military. After two years of military service in Managua he went back to his home region to help his parents on the farm, complete his high school and carry on active duty in the reserve army. Today, Erick continues to help his parents on the farm during the day. In the evening he travels into Esteli to study. He is just completing, his llth year of -school this December and hopes to go on to study to be a veterinary doctor or an agronomist. With the change in government af- ter the elections of February 1990, Erick is no longer sure he will be able to make it to university. The new government is cutting back the fun- ding to many programs that allowed access to higher education for the poorer majority of the population Tools for Peace says. Tools for Peace is a Canadjan organization which was set up in the early 1980s to provide material assistance to Nicar: organizations that were working toward better health care, education, working conditions and safety for the people of Nicaragua. Tools for Peace has been strongly supported by the people of Castlegar over the years. They have given & From Now Until March 29, '91 Sawe 40>: The list price of Abbey 1" & '4" Horizon- tal Blinds, Deck 5 Verticals & Deck 5 Pleated Shades. Now, the support that groups such as Tools for Peace can provide to the Nicaraguans is more important than ever. Erick is touring B.C. and Alberta to encourage that on-going support and to update people on the current situation in his country. IN MEMORY John w.
