WEIGHT PROBLEM TORONTO (CP) — People who are overweight sometimes suffer more from osteoarthritis than do those who tend to watch their weight, says Patrick Baker, director of national and public for the Canadian Arthritis Society. Writing in the current issue of Ontario Nursing Homes, Baker says research shows this is largely because of the strain that the additional weight can put on load-bearing joints like the hips or knees. He says this is one of the few types of arthritis where a physician might recommend a special diet, but it will only be to cut down on the strain. The most common symptoms of osteoarthritis are a sometimes constant “nagging” pain, a mild aching and soreness in certain joints and loss of mobility. OAKVILLE, ONT.
