By INA WARREN The Canadian Press David Hewlett was\a 12-year-old Toronto school kid when David Cronenberg was devising a new breed of telepathic beings? for his sophisticated 1980 horror movie Scan- ners. How else could you make grey southern Ontario soil pass for the rust- colored clay of Prince Edward Island? That’s the kind of down-in-the-dirt to detail that film-maker Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission Conseil de la radiodiftusion et des telécommunications canadiennes Notice of Public Hearing Kevin Sullivan has poured into his $15- million Road to Avonelea series, which has its premiere tonight on CBC. “*We just decided that if we were going to be totally authentic, why go to the trouble of creating all these authen- tic buildings if you couldn’t make the tation between good and evil in a modern metropolis. “*I don’t want to give tod much of it away, but the New Order is about the way some people want to use the Scan- ners for their own evil means. And what of Hewlett's character, David Ketchum? “It’s been changed to ‘Kellum) or *Callum,’’’ hecorrects. “I’ve never seen it in writing but someone on the set came upto me the other day and said: ‘Oh, by the way. Begley keeps landing the major Hollywood roles LOS ANGELES (AP) — When Ed Begley Jr.’s manager first suggested the actor was being considered to co- star in a comedy with Meryl Streép and R inne Barr, Begley was dubious. &- calls continued over the weeks, id Begley remained skeptical. When a script was reported imminent, he told his manager: ‘‘Good. You know, I’ve got that little letter hole in my door. You-put the script right through that little slot when youget it.”’ To Begley’s astonishment, the script of She-Devil arrived from Orion Pictures. “*One day I was set to do a videotape here in L.A. It was sent to (director) Susan Seidelman in New York,"’ he recalled. ‘‘She apparently liked it and sent it to Meryl; she liked it. Then I met with Susan Seidelman and | liked her and she liked me. The next thing 1 know, I was working on the picture.”’ Begley was cast as an ambitious ac- countant who leaves his slovenly wife (Barr) for the self-enchanted author of romance novels (Streep). Barr then becomés the title role, cookin up diabolical plots as revenge on her faithless husband and his willful tem- ptress. Thus Begley appears throughout the film with both stars, who meet’ only briefly. Ctitics have marvelled at Streep’s facility for comedy, heretofore hidden on the screen behind accents and heavy dramatics. “She's done great comedy work over the years on the New York stage and Yale Drama School and what have you,” Begley said. a ‘pple who were fortunate enough to sée that know her well in the world of comedy. She cer- tainly has conquéred the world of television. You .can’t do any better than she’s done, going against a show like Cosby (The Cosby Show) and doing well.
