Jr. B Rebels still | beating bushes Wi President, GM and coach must be in place before May 29, or the KIJHL team won't operate next season. Ed Mills SPORTS EDITOR The Castlegar Rebels re- main a team on the edge of oblivion despite -all efforts beating the bushes looking for a president, general manager ‘and coach. If the Kootenay Interna- tional Junior Hockey League’s annual general meeting were held today, instead of May 25, the Rebels would have to re- quest a year’s leave of absence, said team president Russ Ril- cof. “There is a need for hockey- minded people who are inter- ested in seeing Junior B alive in Castlegar to take thought at least, if not step forward and answer the bell,” Rilcof said. Rilcof told league represen- tatives at the KIJHL’s regular monthly meeting in Creston Wednesday that the the status of the team is still uncertain “At this point it’s business as usual and we’re heavy into planning for next year. “But at the same time there is this cloud hanging over my head, making final decisions difficult to make.” Rilcof and General Manag- er Don Joice are both at the end of two-year: mandates they made for themselves when they took the jobs On the positive side, Rilcof said the search for replace- ments has made some head- way since it began at the end of the playoffs. “There are people who are thinking about it, but I can’t name names right now be- cause they just don’t want to “be pressured any more than I’m already pressuring them. “In the next few days there is going to be some responses to inquires and by our AGM, which is next Thursday, we should be further ahead than we are at the moment.” As for a coach, Rilcof met with Gord Walker Thursday night to discuss his intentions for next season. Walker was the Rebels coach at the end of the season ‘after taking over the job im January. There has been some specu- lation among Rebels’ fans that Walker may take the coach and general manger’s job. Rilcof said it’s too early to comment on that rumor and that he is talking to other can- didates for the coaching job. The club is also looking for directors to help run the team, Rilcof said. Tl offer an apology in advance to Jennifer Chernoff for what I’m about to say about her heartthrob and A No.1 guy, Doug Flutie, who has packed his Boston bags and shuffled off to Cowtown. Chernoff, a 14 year old who lives and breathes Lions football and has matrimonial designs on Flutie, was undoubtedly crushed when she learned about the departure of the ob- ject of her affections. I, on the other hand, have only this to say: Flutie smootie. Who cares? So what? The B.C. Lions might need Doug Flutie’s act at the box office — and that’s debatable — they certainly don’t need the midget in short pants on the football field. (Jennifer’s probably got her pen out now, getting ready to fire off a nasty salvo my way.) __ Sorry Jennifer, but as hard as this have to think even the goobers.in Cal- gary aren’t dumb enough to let Bar- rett sign with B.C. Then again, they did give Doug Flutie a million sheck- les a year, so you never know. I wouldn’t wish an injury on any- one, but I’m willing to wager the little general gets mauled early in the sea- son and collects the bulk of his salary watching soap operas in his hospital bed. I know what your saying Jennifer, “Mills has lost it. He’s bashing the guy who wis the league’s most valuable player and top passer last season.’ Well, I’ve always believed the CFL gave Flutie the mvp award more out of self-interest than anything Flutie did. A former U.S. college star finds fame (an now fortune) in Canada is a nice story for U.S. television and newspa- pers. It’s a lot better story in a market the CFL wants to penetrate than say, some Joe Blow Canadian winning the a stint as. the team’s QB. I wouldn’t put it past Murray (I want out of this may be to believe, the Lions will, at the very least, be just as good as they were last year now that Flutie’s tak- en up residence in snobsville. (Ooooh, did I say snobsville?) And if the Lions manage to get Danny Barrett saetilad tire the Stam- peders, they'll be a much better team. Barrett in a B.C. uniform and I'll call it a Grey Cup for the Lions. But you award. As for Flutie’s record-breaking pass yardage, well, don’t you think maybe the team around the dwarf had some- thing to do with that? I mean, Rick - Hanson could have thrown for over 4,000 yards in a season with the of- fensive line Flutie had in front ofhim. Just as an aside, if B.C. can’t get Barrett, maybe Hanson will consider deal) Pezim from going after Hanson. Boy! What a draw a quarterback in a wheelchair would be, eh. I know he’s cute and everything Jen, but do Lions fans really want a guy playing for their team who has more loyalty to a buck than he does to his uniform? The whole situation just reeks. But I supposed that’s the way professional sports is these days — players are in it for whatever they can get and to hell with team concepts and the fans. Like a lot of other pseudo-super- stars of today, Flutie is a ‘me’ player, as opposed to a ‘we’ player. In the end though, I have to admit I’m glad Flutie decided to remain in the CFL. He does give the league a lit- tle higher profile (though he’s not half the talent Raghib Ismail is) and ifhe puts: another few fans in the seats then all the more power to him. On the other hand, if I were a gen- eral manager or coach instead of a misunderstood sports writer, I’m not sure I’d want Flutie or anybody like him playing on my team. Jennifer Chernoff might miss ya Doug, I don’t. And when the Lions win the Grey Cup this season, you'll be long forgotten. : ‘'@ Saturday, Marchi 28, 1992 ‘CATCH OF THE DAY 8 News photo by Ed Mills Seven-year-old Daniel Lirette of Williams Lake shows off the catch of the day, an 11 1/2 pound, 27 inch, Dolly Vardon he snagged recently at Anderson's Point on the Arrow Lakes.
