3 18 a tsHOPPING at the recent opening day sale of the Clay Castle is Mayor Audrey Moore. The Maple St. store front displays fine ceramics and fanciful gifts, all part of the restructuring of the CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, May 12,1977 Adult Activity Centre into a workshop based on the Wolf Wolfensberger.—Robert Ailman Photo i . = (in cooperation with the Pamily Month emphasis during May, this column has. been Qpened up to other members of the Castlegar clergy. This week's article has been sub- whitted by Rev. Richard Klein.) t. Sunday was Mother's Day. Tam sure that most of you remembered your mother on that day. So it should be. We should honor the person who brought us into this world, and who nursed us and ¢ared for us, One man said that one mother could take care of twelve ebildren and yet twelve chil- dren can't take care of one mother. 5 I trust you not only re- membered your mother on Mother's Day but that you will rémember her and your father tHroughout their lives. The Séripture tells us that we are to honor our father and mother. , The problem as I see it is : that there is very'little respect * for parents today. Young | peo- ple call them “the old man” and “the old lady.” When they get older it seems to be easier to shove them into an old folks hame and forget about them thpn to be bothered with their complaints and their aches, 3 I visit in some af the old folks homes in the surrounding area and one thing strikes me: - sometimes I find people who never have visitors, Yet many of them have children in the same community. How can this be? 3. I ‘personally believe the préblem stems from our mod- defn day society. One trait that hag been borne out in a recent suivey by a major polling nization in the U.S. is that the majority of people have become self-centred. 1 They care only about them- selves and their own happiness. if children or parents get in the idea seems to be growing in Canada too. In plain simple English, these restlts point out that more and more people care only about themselves more and more, So it should not surprise us when a child who is conceived at an inconvenient time is eliminated through abortion. * After all, some people feel that the unborn child isn't human anyway, Who are we trying to fool?- It is only a small step further to eliminate all non-productive people. If parents or children can serve my needs then I take an interest in them; if not, then I get rid of them. While it is easy to do so with a small unborn child who can’t speak up, it is still not quite as easy to do so with older people. However, the time is Pulpit and Pew By Pastor DONALD W. REED fast approaching when this will be the common thing. Already some parents re- fuse to give doctors permission to operate on mentally handi- capped children who are. then , left to die. What makes you think that eliminating old “use- less” people is so far away? If you are concerned, now is the time to start doing something about it. The solu- tion begins at home. If you don’t care about your children, I can.guarantee that they will not care about you. Love, care and concern for family members begins at home. Without the family all society breaks down. Show your children that you care for them as individuals and then there may be some hope for the family,-for society and even for you. irradiation, Pressure ;..- Used in New Therapy. Soviet specialists have de- veloped a new treatment for some forms of cancer, using irradiation of the tumor in a high-pressure oxygen chamber, the Soviet news agency Tass reports. The agency said about 500 patients have received the new treatment at Moscow's Herzen Oncology Institute after con- ventional methods failed. - “Irradiation in the pres- sure chamber not only dam- aged the malignant tumor more effectively but also helped preserve healthy tissues next to it,” Tass said. Cancer cells containing low levels of oxygen are less’ sensitive to radiation but, in the pressure chamber, oxygen sat- , urates all body tissues, includ- + ing those of the tumor. This means the tumor reacts more strongly to radia- tion while the sensitivity of healthy tissues remains con: stant, Tass said. The method has.been‘used to treat lung and some bone cancers and tumors of soft tissues. Ithas also proved effective in combination with surgerys ‘Tass said. The agency i Prof. Yuri Gritsman, deputy director of the Herzen Institute, as saying that, although oxygen is becoming a useful aid in treat- ment, “we do not always succeed in achieving the results we want.” Research on animals is speeding progress in this field, he said. way y that is just too bad. Branch in Vic’. . - torla: v\ Dear Sir: In view of the now-beyond: any-doubt proven threat to . human and animal life, due to the use of deadly chemical potions like 24D and 245T, as well as Tordon pellets to inhibit growth of foliage on powerline rights-of-way, departments of highways and other uses in certain areas, we property we have and start fighting for their lives. Even if no spraying is foreseen in the near future and wise judgment: prevails over’ expediency, and basic rights of men and animals to life and health ‘are respected, we stil! ask you for yet another written assurance that the above- described area, in which we worked so hard to make our homes, will never again be sprayed. with ‘any herbicides, pesticides or defolients, nor owners and taxpayers desire to gain your binding definite as- surance that none of the above- mentioned chemicals will ever be used on our powerline area. ‘That is: from the places the old powerline. and the new powerline start from the Arrow. Lake, both sides of Fauquier Settlement, up to the top of the mountain, where it starts de- scending towards the Slocan Valley. We took up the matter of spraying of 24D and 245T with B.C. Hydro and the department of health and received a com: mitment that these poisonous chemicals would not be used ‘from the place the powerline crosses the Lower Arrow Lake by Fauquier, passing at inter- vals private properties, of which Applegrove is the last, and one extra mile past this last private holding. This agreement, made ‘in 1964, of not spraying the above stretch was held. But. un- fortunately—as_ even . beyond this last extra mile, the. moun- tain climbs steadily up, and the, . water runs down—the results were disastrous, as described in the articles of Andrew Potocki for our Association for Life, reprinted in four B.C. ‘news- papers, which I include for your information. 4 ‘That is why we insist, after these unfortunate happenings, on the definite ban of the poisonous sprays, which have already caused so much havoc and misfortune,. any .nearer than on the other side of the water ‘divide, water-run-off and the Slocan Valley side. . ‘We hope that. they, i in turn, will wake upto: the danger threatening ‘them sooner than between our _ with P pel- ‘This everlasting possibility + of being poisoned again, hang- ing over us, constitutes a psy- chological, ‘ever-present. tor- ment, gnawing at our energy, which we need badly for pro- ductive work. ‘Everybody ‘in the area feels the same threat hanging over them, whether you talk to a farmer, cattleman, landholder or trapper in the mountains.
