Adoption Before Birth Babies who are going to be 5 > put up for adoption should be adopted by their-new parents before birth, a British child specialist said recently. : Policewoman lakes ‘Biggest - “Nab of Her Life : ‘A 9,000-pound Indian ele- phant led “10 police cars on a wild chase through downtown Houston before she was cap- tured—by a 100-pound police- woman, * : “I ran up and grabbed her around her ‘trunk: and she “stopped,” said Officer Wanda Boehm. The elephant, Big Lydia, - ‘Was being unloaded for a circus performance. She was frighten- ‘ ed by a police siren and took off, causing , damage’ at: several dtopas She ran into’ two parked cars and moments later smash- @d into a building, causing some structural damage, police said. ' Big Lydia‘then tried to eacape -all the commotion by attempting to wedge into a garage at a funeral home. She eouldn’t get in and eventually was halted by Officer Boehm. conference at. the Children's Psychiatric Research Institute ‘that when a pregnant woman indicates she intends to put her infant: up for adoption, the adoption agency should contact the adopting couple and say: _ “Eve got good news for you, you're pregnant.” “They (the adopting couple) are then faced with a pregnancy lasting perhaps-six months,” he said. Dr. Jolly said the adoptive mother is then placed in the. position of going through the tisks of a kind of miscarriage, just. as if she was ‘the real mother, since she could still lose the baby ‘if the natural mother decided. to keep it. He said there has been too much emphasis on making sure the baby is perfect before allowing it to be adopted. That does not happen in real life, he said, adding that parent do ‘not ask to have a child inspected for defects before they decide to rear it. Dr. Jolly said all couples seeking a baby through adop- tion should be able to ask whether it is to be black or white. However, the tendency to match the background of the baby with the background of the adopting parents is non- sense. Dr. Hugh Jolly . told__a* Editor, Castlegar News: As the result of the federal government's cuts in govern- ment spending, 200, workers who lost their jobs after the fire at the Castlegar sawmill will have their Unemployment In- surance benefits reduced start- ing Jan. 1, 1979, If that is the case, I consider the provincial govern- ment hasa duty and the respon- sibility to alao do some cutting in the top echelons of Canadian Cellulose, over which it has direct control, Just before leaving for greener pastures, the former Cancer Patients To be Treated With Heroin A New York hospital that specializes in cancer research will soon begin tests on the use of heroin to ease the pain of cancer, The test by Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital, an- nounced at a meeting of the American Cancer Society, is “the first of its kind since President Jimmy Carter's health adviser, Dr. Peter Bourne, last year asked the government to study heroin use for cancer patients. Dr. Kathleen Foley of Memorial Sloan Kettering said the study, sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, is one of several seeking new ways of treating pain associated with cancer. The use of heroin on terminal cancer patients is not unusual in England, where Dr. Cicely Sanders and Dr. Robert Twycross have developed the so-called Brompton Cocktail at St. Christopher's Hospice, a hospital for the dying.$ It consists of varying doses of heroin, cocaine, alcohol, phenothiazine'and chlorophorm water, administered orally. However, in recent test performed by Twycross, it was found that except in a few cases, heroin was not materi- ally better than morphine, the drug commonly used in the U.S. However, smaller doses were required. Folley said that in her tests, starting this. month or next, 40 patients ‘will partici, pate ina study in which neither the patients nor the doctors will know who has heroin and who is getting morphine. _ PAY PROGRESS _ PERMANENCE PRESTIGE Three Openings now for smart young-minded persons in the local branch of a large international firm.
