Funeral services will be held beginning Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Castlegar Funeral Chapel and continuing Friday at 10 a.m. with burial Welfare fraud costs millions, B.C.’s chief investi Figures surprise minister VANCOUVER (CP) — Welfare fraud is big-time crime in British Columbia, says the province's chief welfare fraud investigator. “It's costing honest taxpayers millions of dollars," Mel Wi’ said. ‘‘It seems to be on the increase and is causing us a lot of concern.” Weisgerber stressed that “95 per cent of the people who are collecting welfare are really needy and deserve it. “It’s the five per cent who are greedy that concern us.”’ Organized rings of professional welfare cheats are surfacing, said Weisgerber, who co-ordinates the work of 34 field investigators. A few cheats have been scamming between $40,000 and $50,000, he said. “It’s a lot more organized than you would think,’’ Weisgerber said. British Columbia pays out more than $800 million a year in benefits for the 225,000 welfare cases. Supreme Court. The three men were found not guilty of insider trading two years ago by a provincial court judge. The charges followed the Bennetts sale of more than half a million Doman Industries shares at an average price of $11.38 on Nov. 4, 1988. Trading in Doman stock halted on the Toronto Stock change moments later fallen apart. When trading resumed the next business day, the price of Doman stock fell to $7.50. Lawyers for the Bennetts and matter. The Ontario commission put the hearing on hold last February after an Ontario Supreme Court ruling said the three did not have to testify from British Columbia. The court said it had no jurisdic- tion to make an order under which an agent for the commission would take evidence from the Bennetts and Doman in British Columbia.
