This Christmas

Christmas trees, mistletoe,
brightly colored lights, Santa
Claus and gifts are all a part of
a very special time of year
known as Christmas.

Never, at any other time of
the year have the stores been
so full both of people and
potential presents. Nor have so
many pictures been taken of
children on a fat old man's lap.
In fact Santa seems to be as
ageless as God Himself. Always
ready with an open ear to re-
ceive your requests.

Truly all people must ad-
mit that Christmas is a most
peculiar time ofthe year. It
never ceases to amaze me, if
Christmas is such a fun time,
full of good cheer towards all,
why people are smothered in
depression and hopelessness
immediately following the fes-
tive season. Statistics show
that there are more mental
breakdowns and suicides at this
time of the year than at any
other. : sired

Why? Have we strayed

‘from the original purpose of

Christmas?

IfI took a poll of the adult
population in this area, en-
quiring as to the real meaning
or basis for Christmas, over 95
per cent would probably an-
swer that Christmas is a time
when we celebrate the birth of
Jesus.

If this is true, then we
should not be content to put
Jesus in the back corner of our
mind. i

The following story illus-
trates what most people do:

Many people were gather-
ing in a large living room. They
all seemed to be very happy,
giving each other gifts, playing
games and preparing for a
rather large feast. I asked them
what it was they were all cele-
brating.

One lady spoke up and said
that it was her son’s birthday. I
asked her where her son was as
I wished to congratulate him.
To my astonishment the woman
responded by announcing that

she had left him at home.-But.

she justified the gathering by
stating that she had wished him

happy birthday just before she |

had left for the party. ~

Are we guilty of giving
Christ only one hour of our time
at a place of worship — or
possibly no time at all — before
we scurry off to our own select
celebrations? :

It was God who originated
Christmas. And it is God's Son's
birthday. Therefore Jesus
should be in the center of all
celebrations.

God so loved the world He
gave His only son. This is truly
the “good news” that the angels
were referring to when talking
to the shepherds.

“Him that cometh unto me
I will in no wise cast out.”

Imagine, the Messiah com-
ing to earth in human form just
because He loved us, and that if
we come to him in repentance
asking Him to reveal Himself to

us, He gives us a happy, .

meaningful, forgiven life.
