B6 CASTLEGAR NEWS, February 17, 1962 Canada’s bomber force | By ROD CURRIE OTTAWA (CP) — One of the remarkable things about the legion of Canadian youths who went to fight the air battles of the Second World War is how incredibly naive and unworldly many of them were. And not only about war, ssys Douglas Harvey — who has written. a book about those days — but also about sex, wine, politics and Euro- pean customs. But they were fast learn ers. “We were naive by any standard but by today's liberated standards we were incredible,” Harvey writes, “Kids today can’t believe how mn we were, mre can never be deter- “ mined how many aircrew died in a virgin state, but it was undoubtedly a very high percentage.” Boys, Bombs and Brussels Sprouts, published by Mc- Clelland and Stewart, is Har- vey’s rollicking recollection of those fun-and-fearful days when he was one of the band of 18- and 19-year-olds eager to leave humdrum lives in post-Depression Canada to learn to fly and bomb the Germans. HAS LIGHT MOMENTS Harvey, now 57, retired , and living in Florida, was still a teen when he: became a sergeant pilot and command- er of a bomber whose crew included several officers. The book is a‘.mix of hilarity and tragedy, the story of young men who sud- denly found themselves bil- leted in freezing Nisson huts in the English countryside surrounded by unfamiliar people whose customs puz- zled and delighted them. ‘There is also the incredible courage, the foolishnesr, the cowardice andthe’ terror associated with flying through silent night ‘skies, headed for unseen destins- Sens hundreds of miles away. to drop bombs. Why did it take Harvey so long to write the book? : First, he said in an inter- view, he always thought others would do it. They * never did. Second, there was consid- erable “peer pressure.” There would be criticism — “everyone saw the war their own way.” Already, he says, other veterans say: “You think that was something — you should have spent four years with me in a Japanese prison camp.” HAS HAD LOW PROFILE But, he says, he ‘finally was. moved to write because so little .had been recorded about the contribution made by Canadian bomber crews and because young people — including his own five chil- dren — knew so little about those days. “Little, if anything, has been written about the only bomb force Canada ever had —No. 6 Group of the Royal Canadian. “Air” Force,” he writes. ."“Most Canadians have er realized that in the Second World War ‘the RCAF was the world’s fourth largest air force and No. 6 Group its largest fighting component.” - Harvey, a Toronto native, was a high-school dropout and when war came he and", many others went to three- month Canadian Legion courses at night to get the matriculation needed for air crew. é , They taught him to fly but nothing about handling the delicate problem of sergeant- officer relations, In the air, as pilot, he was absolute boss. Back on the ground he and others of similar rank went miles by truck to their cold, cheerless quarters. Officers went: to the nearby officers’ quarters. 3 It. rankled, _ particularly when it was he who was chastised because an officer. crew member didn’t show up “for a briefing. When Harvey finally was offered a commis- sion he declined because his gunners were not offered the same promotion. Later, the RCAF accepted “the popular and practical” stance that all aircrew should hold and was a wing commander when he retired. ‘There was the time the “HOMEGOODS FURNITURE WAREHOUSE Tues.-Sat. 9:30-5:30 China Creek “Drive a Little to Save a Lot” Harvey went searching for Jock, his miss- ing flight engineer, and found him in bed with Rosie, with Rosie's mother serving tea. She offered Harvey some but he fled in embarrassment. “It took about an hour be- fore I realized that I had been the only one embarrassed.” -Boys, Bombs and Brussels ~ Sprouts, McClelland. and § Stewart; 210 Pages, $16.95. ‘SOUTH sLOcAN NAKUSe NEW DENVER WANETA PLAZA One Application © ~-.and You're Covered.
