It is also his conviction that one of the ways the board can help make adequate educa- tional funding a higher provincial priority is to en- sure that Victoria knows about and jis freqently re- minded of the educational * situation here in Castlegar. With his abilities, interest GUGLIELMI: Access to education Antonio “Tony” Guglielmi is well known in Castlegar as a hardworking, dependable, enthusiastic and community oriented person and he wants to-bring these qualities as well as his skills and abilities to the school board on Nov. 16. and has a lot to contribute to a school district which could be going through some very dif- ficult times in the next two years. He asks for your ‘support on Nov. 16. Born and educated in Italy and trained as a chemical technologist, Guglielmi came. | to Canada in 1967. He has worked as a letter carrier for Canada Post for the past 11 years and settled in Castle. gar in 1979. t He and. his wife Diane }!’ brought to Castlegar a strong commitment to contribute to the life of their community. With their three daughters, Lisa, Irene and Angela in elementary school, some of the focus for their energies has naturally been within a local parent support group and on behalf of good ser- vices for children in this dis- trict. Presently, Guglielmi is ~ serving his second term as president of his local of the Letter Carrier's Union; takes part in the life of St. Rita’s Parish; and is an active dir- ector for the Aquanauts Swim Club. As well, he vol- unteers as the co-ordinator of a social club which annually sponsors a giant Christmas potluck and a spring picnic for the community at large. Guglielmi’s decision to put his name forward as a school trustee came from a convic- tion that Castlegar needs a school board that- will ac- tively defend the right of all the children in this commun- ity to have equal access to x quality education — one which meets their particular needs and one which will give LINDA KRULL School board candidate for City of Castlegar KRULL: Continued dedication Allow me to introduce my- self. I am Linda Krull, mother of three (two are in the school system), running for my second term as school trustee for School District No. 9 (Castlegar). Your concerns are my concerns: our children’s edu- cation, to see they get the best education this school district is able to provide. During the past two years Ihave gained the experience so essential to a school trus- tee, toured every school in our district, spent countless hours learning procedures, meeting staff and attending meetings. This past year I have been chairperson of the transpor- tation and CUPE — labor management committees and them the necessary skills to-a member of the policy com- become productive, creative, caring and contributing adults. Guglielmi is concerned that the quality of our children's education could seriously deteriorate over the next few years as class sizes increase, - more demands are placed on the staff, and support ser- vices decline. He believes it is the responsibility of the board to keep the community well informed as to the situ- ation and to ask for input and support when necessary. mittee. Also, I have attended every education and regular board meeting. For the past two years I have been our board's mem- ber at the branch level (our branch includes Trail, Grand Forks, Nelson, Arrow Lakes, Nakusp and Castlegar school districts). Ls My previous promise was to be available to listen to your concerns and I feel I have helped to the best of my ability. I promised hard work and Ihave hours and am prepared to continue this dedication. _ Since I do’ not work outside’ the hame, I have the time to work for you. : I believe our community is a good community and be- cause of this I feel I want to contribute. Foster Parents -is still of interest to my family: Since last.spring I have become a voting member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch’170. I have served on or chaired most every commit- tee; and this recent two-year" term have acted as board chairman. This is what I have done. I would like ‘to tell you what you might expect in the next two years. e Firstly, you can expect the same amount of time and ef- fort, working for your chil- dren and their education. You can expect honesty, integrity and decisiveness. You can expect that I will listen to your concerns and =| make decisions in the best ) interest of all students in 5 School District No. 9. “You can expect that I will not use my position as trus- tee to do battle with the provincial government. That battle must be fought during the next provincial election. I will not jeopardize local autonomy (little as it may be) for a fight we cannot win. (I remind you of the removal of the. Vancouver School Board). I believe it to be my ob- ligation to do all that can H legally be done in the inter- DOREEN SMECHER School board candidate for city of Castlegar SMECHER: Restraint not easy I have served on the school board for the past: six years and am seeking re-election. I know I can continue to make a positive contribution to education. Education in this district and province has undergone the worst two years in its recent history. This district has fallen victim to restraint, losing programs and_ ser- vices. - It was evident that with a lower level of funding some- thing had to be sacrificed. It was not easy, it was not pleasant, it was necessary. But we did not only lose; we saved. We. saved the excellent working relationship with our teaching staff. We saved the excellent working -rela- tionship with our support staff. This didn't just happen, with all the stress and pres- sures of provincial govern- ment rulings, all of us — board, teacher and non- teacher — strived to main- tain harmony and we suc- ceeded. I take pride in having played a major role in that effort and express my ap- preciation to the CDTA members and the CUPE ests of the students and em- ployees of this district. What this board needs is trustees who are willing to give of their time; trustees who will listen to your con- cerns; trustees who are hon- est and forthright; trustees who are prepared to make decisions. I've proven myself to: be that kind of trustee. On Nov. 16 vote Smecher. Thank you.
