Federal statistics show that six out of 10 women who are charged with murder are married, living common-law or sharing a domestic rela tionship, said Dorothy Hep- worth, an official of the pro- grams branch of the Solicitor General's Department. On the other hand, Hep worth said men who murder are more likely to be single, with the crime stemming from a business or social situation. Although he has an extensive background in forestry and labor relations, his political experience consists of sitting on the local school board for five years before running in this southeastern provincial riding and winning it from the NDP in 1983. Nuclear sites worry B.C. By The Canadian Press VICTORIA — British Co- lumbia wants the federal government to tell the Unit- ed States it is concerned about the safety of nuclear facilities close to the Can- adian border, says Inter- governmental! Relations Minister Garde Gardom. Gardom sent two letters last month to External Af- fairs Minister Joe Clark on the matter. Of particular concern to B.C. are nuclear installations at the Hanford Reserve at Richland, Wash., about 300 kilometres from the border, and reactors in Rainier, Ore., and Idaho Falls, Idaho, Gar. dom said. The first letter, dated June 2, sought assurances that the Canadian government has told the United States “that nuclear facilities operating near the Canadian border should be maintained with the highest possible regard for public safety.” Gardom requested an ac count of the measures taken by Ottawa to inform U.S. authorities of Canadian con. cerns, and of what infor. mation the Americans haxe provided regarding the safe ty of reactors closest to B.C. He said nuclear safety re quires close cooperation be- tween the two countries and suggested the International 21" c/w Bag Regular $519 HENNE’S MARINE 365-3219 10 minutes from Costlegor on Arrow Lakes at Scotties LAWN-BOY } MOWER CLEARANCE Example — Model 7268 434 — All models in stock — Joint Commission be invol- ved in handling the matter. Gardom's second letter, dated June 10, dealt speci- fically, with a proposal to establish a repository in Hanford, Wash., for the permanent disposal of spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste. “I understand that Han- ford is only one of three sites under consideration, and that a final decision is unlikely for some time,” he said. Nonetheless, Gardom wants to know what Ottawa has done to register Cana- dian concerns about such a nuclear waste dump at Han- ford. Gardom's letters were sent about a month after the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident in the Soviet Union.
