Doc Severinsen

The “Tonight Show” band
leader was born Carl H. Sever-
insen in Arlington, Ohio, on
July 7, 1927. The son of a phy-
sician, he picked up the nick-
name “Doc” as a child — his fa-
ther was known as “Big Doc,”
and he was called “Little
Doc.” Severinsen was a musi-
cal prodigy. Encouraged by his
father, he began touring with
the Ted Fio Rito Orchestra in
the 1940s before graduating
from high school. After the
war, he played with bands led
by Tommy Dorsey, Benny
Goodman, Charlie Barnet and
Vaughn Monroe. In 1949, he
became a staff musician for
NBC in New York City and
was a studio trumpet player,
