The strongest vindication of the course pursued by the governor of Idaho, in putting down the Coeur d'Alene dynamiters, comes, strangely enough, from Edwin Boyce, presi- dent of the Western Federatiun of Miners, through the congressicnal ii ation set on foot at his own instigation. J. L. Kennedy; 2 mem- ber of the industrial commission, visited the Coeur d’Alene country and investigated the troubles there. He then stated the facts as they have been published and thereby in- curred’ the wrath of Boyce, who called on every labor organization and labor paper in the country to condemn him. . Mr. Kennedy now produces docu- ments to prove that Boyce three yeurs ago repudiated the title of trades unionist. He produces let- ters written by Boyce to Samuel Gompers, president of the American Federatton of Labor, in which Boyce advocates rescr. to the sword and denies that he is a trades unionist. In response to another letter from Mr. Gompers, Boyce wrote that. hy ‘is not a president of a trades union or a member of one,” thus implying “that the Western Federation of Miners is not a trades union. If any further evidence were needed that the confilct in the Coeur d@’Alenes was not between law and a trades union, but between law and « lawless conspiracy, it is fur- nished here by Boyce. The author- ities of the United States and the state of Idaho have made it plain that they will rot trifle with lawless- ness. ‘The dynamiters know that . they can expect no quarter in Brit- ‘ish Columbia, for any outbreaks wlike that at Wardner would be put down with a firm hand and condign punishment would be visited upon the perpetrators. The most dastardly thing about these dynamiters, next to theirovert. acts themselves, is that they have been carrying on a criminal conspi- racy under the respectable and uni- versally respected guise of trades unionism, which their leader years ago repudiated. The trades union isnow regarded in every free coun- try as a highly necessary means of protecting the rights of the employe under the law in his dealings with th: employer. Very many employ- ers of labor infinitely prefer to settle questio.s of wages and conditions of work with a committee fromatrades union, composed, as it usually is, of the most business-like, intelli- gent and level-headed members. Membership in a-union of skilled workmen has come to be regarded n many trades as a certificate of proficiency and reliability and is a passport to employment in many instances. Even after along and bitter strike, the employer gladly takes back his old workmen with whom.he has been contending. But when a band of dynamiters seeks to cloak itself under the disguise of ini it throws ion on lawful unions, discredits them and prejudices employers against them. It is therefore as deadly an enemy of labor unions as of all industry and of the community as a whole. The members of the unions, in their own interest, should be the first to condemn and renounce allsympathy with such organizations as that which has been uprooted from the Coeur d’Alenes. 7 of telling all the real or imaginary, of the Canadian Pacific Railway com- pany. It also ‘indulges in various personali- ties about the officials, which are mere displays of bad temper. The Miner appears to overlodk a few facts in its assaults on the C. P. R. One is that the publics is not ROSSLAND EVENING RECORD, JANUARY 20, 1900. P, R., the Miner might expend them on self-improve- ment, which would be keenly-appre- .ciated by its readers. If the Miner wishes to improve its telegraph service, it. can. do.so by paying for it, as the newspapérs in the United States do. It is simply a question of dollars and cents. The Associated Press in the Uni- ted States has ‘a leased wire, devo- ted exclusively to the carrying of news. This involves the employ- ment of special operators, the best on the continent, whose salaries alone amount to more than the Miner pays’ altogether for its tele- graphic news. So~ long as the Miner dues not print more graphic news, it is fair to presame that it does not pay the price, and that the reason why it does not pay this price is that its limited circula- tion does not justify its doing so. If the Miner is not getting al! that it pays for, there is a very. simple remedy—it can enter suit for breach of contract. Mr. Heinze has never been backward about begining suits to defend what he considers his rights. If it is getting all that it pays for, let it pay more and it will get more. So long as it does’ not care to do this, our dissatisfied friend cannot complain if it does not get a gallon when it only pays for a quart. _Nor will it get relief by telling its troubles to its readers; let it negotiate on business princi- ples. with the Canadian Associated ,Press to get more news for its money. When the officials of that organization see the dreary waste of dullness in the pages of the Miner, they may be induced to make an ef- fort to brighten itup, provided the Miner will approach them with the Politeness due from man to man, and not call them donkeys. a and dul- lards. ‘To Cure a Cold In One Day “Take Laxative Bromine.
