Sugar in all its delectable forms has been blamed for ills ranging from tooth decay, to hyperactivity in children, to obesity. Canadians, who eat an average of 40 kilograms of sugar a year, have been told by dentists and nutritionists to temper their indulgence in the sweet sin. But now the much-maligned industry that produces it is fighting back. Rocked by competition from artificial sweeteners, the Canadian Sugar Institute, which represents Canada's three major refiners, has launched a $1-million advertising campaign to convince skeptical consumers that sugar is not the nutritional evil it has been portrayed to be. The glossy, eye-catching ads, which will run throughout the year in eight Canadian magazines, argue sugar is a natural food — a complement to a well-balanced diet — that can't be matched by an “artificial substitute.” CHALLENGE B' The ads, which first appeared in the January issues of such as and Chatelai di y z" s’ beliefs by declaring sugar to be a “diet food” that can also be used in a diet drink. 1 ‘i d Library holds fundraising event By JUDY WEARMOUTH Thanks to all the efforts of the senior citizens and Florence Laycock in particu lar, the Castlegar library fundraising coffee and muffin morning was a complete success. The three companies produced one million tonnes — or $500 million worth — of sugar last year. The industry is under attack by the producers of sugar substitutes such as Nutrasweet, which are spending $50 million a year in Canada on what Thompson calls anti-sugar ads. He notes that 25 per cent of the soft drinks sold in this country are sugar-free. With the patent on the aspartame used in Nutrasweet due to expire in 1987, the industry worries the competition will be even more affordable. But the sugar industry's counter-attack has caused some consternation in the medical profession. Dr. David Jenkins, professor of nutrition at the Unitersity of Toronto medical school, says “the sugar people are telling a tale that isn't altogether true” — adding that sellers of artificial sweeteners are also less than totally honest. BAFFLED BY CLAIM Dr. Ralph Burgess, head of preventive dentistry at the Toronto university, says he is baffled by the institute’s claim that sugar is not a major cause of cavities. The ad states that snacking and lack of hygiene are more important contributors to decay than sugar, but Women seek new jobs WINNIPEG (CP) — Carol Wiebe says a lot of people do a double-take when they see her in the driver's seat of an 18-wheel truck cruising down the highway. Many people simply don’t expect to see a woman doing what has traditionally been a man's job. But Wiebe, 29, said she found that taking a job once coinsidered for-men-only came naturally. “T've really enjoyed it,” said Wiebe, who's currently off work because she’s preg- nent. She still teams up with her truck-driver husband for paying than jobs in construc- tion, for example. And educators say more women are studying for careers that used to be male preserves. For example, at Red River Community College in Win nipeg, nine of the 18 students in the biological engineering technology program are women. Andy Gaskin of the Canada Employment Centre at the University of Winnipeg said employers are making an effort to interview women graduates for jobs. “Women are standing up “Hey, half the brains in this country are in women's heads.’ There is a trend to choose the best person.” Susan Hart, co-ordinator of the Manitoba Federation of Labor, said legislation that prevents discrimimation against women and affirma- tive action have also speeded up the process. “Legislation brings forth an attitude change,” said Hart. “It becomes unaccept able to keep women out.” While women have moved into many male-dominated occupations, Hart said the biggest gain has been in the public adminstration field. Governments were the first to hire more women in positions of authority. By 1981, the number of women employed in public administration had increased to 36.4 per cent. Cavities occur when bacteria in the mouth breaks down food and creates an acid, which attacks teeth. Burgess says sugar releases more acid than most foods and also produces the bacteria which starts the process.
