Natural Resources and Forestry
Canada have the answers. And they
have teamed up to turn
schoolchildren and their parents into
happy campers and budding
foresters.

This spring, a made-in-New Brun
swick forestry quiz. game called
Treevia will be introduced in schools
and ranger stations.

Players, from 10 to adult, can learn
woodpeckers knock wood 20 times a
second, Indian babies were pampered
in peat moss, and wood pulp is used
to make record albums.

The game has 246 game cards, with
more than 700 questions and answers
in English and French

And already there are orders for
more than 10,000 games from Alber-
ta, Prince Edward Island, Quebec,
Ontario and other provinces.

In Sault St. Marie, Ont., wood pr-
oducts dealers -are using a prototype
of the game to drum up business
Customers spin a wheel to pick
discounts on certain items and then
must answer a Treevia question to
earn them

Dawn Watson is adding "the game
to her wasp’s nest, peel-apart velcro
pinecones, and Sylvester, the stuffed
furry tree — props in her forest
education programs in New Brun-
swick schools.

The game may even be used for a

department's information officer and
her federal counterpart, Steve Knight.
spent three years developing Treevia.

The game is based on an idea that’s
been bouncing around forestry circles
since the event of Trivial Pursuit. The
questions for Treevia were researched
by two summer students in Frederic
ton, with help from the Maritime
Forest Rangers School

‘It's a way to get everybody's in
terest. in forestry, a jumping-off
point,’’ Watson said

“Forestry is wonderful to children:
it’s scary to adults. And the young
people are going to be stewards of
these resources in very short order."*

The game is funded under a forest
renewal agreement with Ottawa

It highlights such trivia as the great
Miramichi fire that wiped out one-
fifth of New Brunswick in 10 hours
and the fact that the province has the
highest percentage in the world of
land area classed as forest

Along with lighter questions on
male and female pinecones and what
bowling alleys are made of, Treevia
broaches issues like clear-cutting,
clean air and wildlife preservation

“It's not just a throwaway,’” Wat
son said-“Fhere’s a goat involved. If
you don't know the answer, then
you're going to start thinking a little
more about our forests here what
they mean to us as esthetic, economic
and environmental gifts.””
