We ourselves, like the Castlegar Bridge Committee, can. not see why Castlegar should not get a free bridge Everyone will agree that the need for a bridge, free or toll, is urgent. But why should we ask tor a toll pridge? If it comes to a aase of a toll Bridge or no bridge at all, that’s a different story. But -surely our case is strong enough that we'll get a free bridge if we press for one. «4 In ‘the first place, the abnormal! upsurge of traffic that will use such a bridge once the Celgar Project, gets under- way, will be of benefit to the whole province, in one way or another and it is quite just that the whole province should pay for the bridge. If the cost ot a bridge here is borne by the general revenue of the Province, each person will be paying only a small part of the total. But if the bridge is a toll bridge. this district alone will pay the total and the cost to each dis- arict resident will be far from negligible. To look at it another way, bridges—free bridges that is —have been built in other parts of the province. We have helped pay for them, through the gasoline and automobile taxes and licences we Castlegar residents have purchased. We don’t really mind when some of our money helps to fill a press. ing need’ elsewhere, but isn't it about time. that some of that money is used for our benefit. ° Furthermore, to the contention that there is no money Yor a bridge here at this time, the amount now being expend- ed every year on the Castlegar ferry, would be applied to pay ments on a bridge, go a long way towards having such a struc-|} ¢ ture paid for in comparatively short order. Another fact we must not overlook is that with a toll bridge here, a toll bridge at Nelson and the ferry on the Main Lake, this district could lose most ‘of its attractiveness for tourists. F If, in spite of all this however, if it is impossible to get a nomtoll bridge here, then let’s have a toll bridge. But the present situation and the expansion of the near future give us every right to have a free brides, 4 ie. a bridge paid for by the province as a whole. # From. where I’m looking, it would appear that some of our citizens: are suffering from that all top common disease of grow- ing communities and large cities, Civil Defence Work. Moral Obligations: The reason for this outburst*of annoyance and concern stems from, first, a certain motion pass- ed by the Castlegar Community Club in late 1949, which reads: “The C progress of civil defence in this area, gave a complete picture of what ‘has been accomplishéd so far and outlined the plans for the future. Mr. Marcolin stated that, begin- ning in the new year, a number of courses would be instituted in which Kinnaird would definitely participate.
